An-Najm
The Star
﷽
النجم
وَٱلنَّجْمِ By the star wal-najmi when idhā it goes down hawā
By the star when it descends,
مَا Not mā has strayed ḍalla your companion ṣāḥibukum and not wamā has he erred ghawā
Your companion [i.e., Muḥammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred,
وَمَا And not wamā he speaks yanṭiqu from ʿani the desire l-hawā
Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.
إِنْ Not in it huwa (is) except illā a revelation waḥyun revealed yūḥā
It is not but a revelation revealed,
عَلَّمَهُۥ Has taught him ʿallamahu the (one) mighty shadīdu (in) power l-quwā
Taught to him by one intense in strength [i.e., Gabriel] -
ذُو Possessor of soundness dhū Possessor of soundness mirratin And he rose fa-is'tawā
One of soundness.1 And he rose to [his] true form2
وَهُوَ While he wahuwa (was) in the horizon bil-ufuqi the highest l-aʿlā
While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon.1
ثُمَّ Then thumma he approached danā and came down fatadallā
Then he approached and descended
فَكَانَ And was fakāna (at) a distance qāba (of) two bow-(lengths) qawsayni or aw nearer adnā
And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer.
فَأَوْحَىٰٓ So he revealed fa-awḥā to ilā His slave ʿabdihi what mā he revealed awḥā
And he revealed to His Servant1 what he revealed [i.e., conveyed].
مَا Not mā lied kadhaba the heart l-fuādu what mā it saw raā
The heart1 did not lie [about] what it saw.
أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ Then will you dispute with him afatumārūnahu about ʿalā what mā he saw yarā
So will you dispute with him over what he saw?
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad he saw him raāhu (in) descent nazlatan another ukh'rā
And he certainly saw him in another descent1
عِندَ Near ʿinda (the) Lote Tree sid'rati (of) the utmost boundary l-muntahā
At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary -
عِندَهَا Near it ʿindahā (is the) Garden jannatu (of) Abode l-mawā
Near it is the Garden of Refuge [i.e., Paradise] -
إِذْ When idh covered yaghshā the Lote Tree l-sid'rata what mā covers yaghshā
When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it].1
مَا Not mā swerved zāgha the sight l-baṣaru and not wamā it transgressed ṭaghā
The sight [of the Prophet (ﷺ)] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit].
لَقَدْ Certainly laqad he saw raā of min (the) Signs āyāti (of) his Lord rabbihi the Greatest l-kub'rā
He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ So have you seen afara-aytumu the Lat l-lāta and the Uzza wal-ʿuzā
So have you considered al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā?
وَمَنَوٰةَ And Manat wamanata the third l-thālithata the other l-ukh'rā
And Manāt, the third - the other one?1
أَلَكُمُ Is for you alakumu the male l-dhakaru and for Him walahu the female l-unthā
Is the male for you and for Him the female?
تِلْكَ This til'ka then idhan (is) a division qis'matun unfair ḍīzā
That, then, is an unjust division.1
إِنْ Not in they hiya (are) except illā names asmāon you have named them sammaytumūhā you antum and your forefathers waābāukum not mā has Allah sent down anzala has Allah sent down l-lahu for it bihā any min authority sul'ṭānin Not in they follow yattabiʿūna except illā assumption l-ẓana and what wamā desire tahwā the(ir) souls l-anfusu And certainly walaqad has come to them jāahum from min their Lord rabbihimu the guidance l-hudā
They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allāh has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance.
أَمْ Or am (is) for man lil'insāni what mā he wishes tamannā
Or is there for man whatever he wishes?
فَلِلَّهِ But for Allah falillahi (is) the last l-ākhiratu and the first wal-ūlā
Rather, to Allāh belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].
۞ وَكَم And how many wakam of min (the) Angels malakin in fī the heavens l-samāwāti not lā will avail tugh'nī their intercession shafāʿatuhum anything shayan except illā after min after baʿdi [that] an Allah has given permission yadhana Allah has given permission l-lahu for whom liman He wills yashāu and approves wayarḍā
And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allāh has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves.
