الٓمٓصٓ

Alif Laam Meem Saad

alif-lam-meem-sad

Alif, Lām, Meem, Ṣād.1

— Saheeh International

كِتَـٰبٌ

(This is) a Book

kitābun

أُنزِلَ

revealed

unzila

إِلَيْكَ

to you

ilayka

فَلَا

so (let) not

falā

يَكُن

be

yakun

فِى

in

صَدْرِكَ

your breast

ṣadrika

حَرَجٌۭ

any uneasiness

ḥarajun

مِّنْهُ

from it

min'hu

لِتُنذِرَ

that you warn

litundhira

بِهِۦ

with it

bihi

وَذِكْرَىٰ

and a reminder

wadhik'rā

لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

for the believers

lil'mu'minīna

٢

[This is] a Book revealed to you, [O Muḥammad] - so let there not be in your breast distress therefrom - that you may warn thereby and as a reminder to the believers.

— Saheeh International

ٱتَّبِعُوا۟

Follow

ittabiʿū

مَآ

what

أُنزِلَ

has been revealed

unzila

إِلَيْكُم

to you

ilaykum

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbikum

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَتَّبِعُوا۟

follow

tattabiʿū

مِن

from

min

دُونِهِۦٓ

beside Him

dūnihi

أَوْلِيَآءَ ۗ

any allies

awliyāa

قَلِيلًۭا

Little

qalīlan

مَّا

(is) what

تَذَكَّرُونَ

you remember

tadhakkarūna

٣

Follow, [O mankind], what has been revealed to you from your Lord and do not follow other than Him any allies. Little do you remember.

— Saheeh International

وَكَم

And how many

wakam

مِّن

of

min

قَرْيَةٍ

a city

qaryatin

أَهْلَكْنَـٰهَا

We destroyed it

ahlaknāhā

فَجَآءَهَا

and came to it

fajāahā

بَأْسُنَا

Our punishment

basunā

بَيَـٰتًا

(at) night

bayātan

أَوْ

or

aw

هُمْ

(while) they

hum

قَآئِلُونَ

were sleeping at noon

qāilūna

٤

And how many cities have We destroyed, and Our punishment came to them at night or while they were sleeping at noon.

— Saheeh International

فَمَا

Then not

famā

كَانَ

was

kāna

دَعْوَىٰهُمْ

their plea

daʿwāhum

إِذْ

when

idh

جَآءَهُم

came to them

jāahum

بَأْسُنَآ

Our punishment

basunā

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَن

that

an

قَالُوٓا۟

they said

qālū

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

كُنَّا

were

kunnā

ظَـٰلِمِينَ

wrongdoers

ẓālimīna

٥

And their declaration when Our punishment came to them was only that they said, "Indeed, we were wrongdoers!"

— Saheeh International

فَلَنَسْـَٔلَنَّ

Then surely We will question

falanasalanna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those (to) whom

alladhīna

أُرْسِلَ

were sent

ur'sila

إِلَيْهِمْ

to them (Messengers)

ilayhim

وَلَنَسْـَٔلَنَّ

and surely We will question

walanasalanna

ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

the Messengers

l-mur'salīna

٦

Then We will surely question those to whom [a message] was sent, and We will surely question the messengers.

— Saheeh International

فَلَنَقُصَّنَّ

Then surely We will narrate

falanaquṣṣanna

عَلَيْهِم

to them

ʿalayhim

بِعِلْمٍۢ ۖ

with knowledge

biʿil'min

وَمَا

and not

wamā

كُنَّا

were We

kunnā

غَآئِبِينَ

absent

ghāibīna

٧

Then We will surely relate [their deeds] to them with knowledge, and We were not [at all] absent.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلْوَزْنُ

And the weighing

wal-waznu

يَوْمَئِذٍ

that day

yawma-idhin

ٱلْحَقُّ ۚ

(will be) the truth

l-ḥaqu

فَمَن

So whose

faman

ثَقُلَتْ

(will be) heavy

thaqulat

مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ

his scales

mawāzīnuhu

فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

then those

fa-ulāika

هُمُ

[they]

humu

ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ

(will be) the successful ones

l-muf'liḥūna

٨

And the weighing [of deeds] that Day will be the truth. So those whose scales are heavy - it is they who will be the successful.

— Saheeh International

وَمَنْ

And (for) those

waman

خَفَّتْ

(will be) light

khaffat

مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ

his scales

mawāzīnuhu

فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

so those

fa-ulāika

ٱلَّذِينَ

(will be) the ones who

alladhīna

خَسِرُوٓا۟

lost

khasirū

أَنفُسَهُم

themselves

anfusahum

بِمَا

because

bimā

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا

to Our Verses

biāyātinā

يَظْلِمُونَ

(doing) injustice

yaẓlimūna

٩

And those whose scales are light - they are the ones who will lose themselves for what injustice they were doing toward Our verses.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

مَكَّنَّـٰكُمْ

We established you

makkannākum

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

وَجَعَلْنَا

and We made

wajaʿalnā

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

مَعَـٰيِشَ ۗ

livelihood

maʿāyisha

قَلِيلًۭا

Little

qalīlan

مَّا

(is) what

تَشْكُرُونَ

you (are) grateful

tashkurūna

١٠

And We have certainly established you upon the earth and made for you therein ways of livelihood. Little are you grateful.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ

We created you

khalaqnākum

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

صَوَّرْنَـٰكُمْ

We fashioned you

ṣawwarnākum

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

قُلْنَا

We said

qul'nā

لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ

to the Angels

lil'malāikati

ٱسْجُدُوا۟

Prostrate

us'judū

لِـَٔادَمَ

to Adam

liādama

فَسَجَدُوٓا۟

So they prostrated

fasajadū

إِلَّآ

except

illā

إِبْلِيسَ

Iblis

ib'līsa

لَمْ

Not

lam

يَكُن

he was

yakun

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ

those who prostrated

l-sājidīna

١١

And We have certainly created you, [O mankind], and given you [human] form. Then We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblees.1 He was not of those who prostrated.

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

(Allah) said

qāla

مَا

What

مَنَعَكَ

prevented you

manaʿaka

أَلَّا

that not

allā

تَسْجُدَ

you prostrate

tasjuda

إِذْ

when

idh

أَمَرْتُكَ ۖ

I commanded you

amartuka

قَالَ

(Shaitaan) said

qāla

أَنَا۠

I am

anā

خَيْرٌۭ

better

khayrun

مِّنْهُ

than him

min'hu

خَلَقْتَنِى

You created me

khalaqtanī

مِن

from

min

نَّارٍۢ

fire

nārin

وَخَلَقْتَهُۥ

and You created him

wakhalaqtahu

مِن

from

min

طِينٍۢ

clay

ṭīnin

١٢

[Allāh] said, "What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?" [Satan] said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay [i.e., earth]."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

(Allah) said

qāla

فَٱهْبِطْ

Then go down

fa-ih'biṭ

مِنْهَا

from it

min'hā

فَمَا

for not

famā

يَكُونُ

it is

yakūnu

لَكَ

for you

laka

أَن

that

an

تَتَكَبَّرَ

you be arrogant

tatakabbara

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

فَٱخْرُجْ

So get out

fa-ukh'ruj

إِنَّكَ

indeed, you

innaka

مِنَ

(are) of

mina

ٱلصَّـٰغِرِينَ

the disgraced ones

l-ṣāghirīna

١٣

[Allāh] said, "Descend from it [i.e., Paradise], for it is not for you to be arrogant therein. So get out; indeed, you are of the debased."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

(Shaitaan) said

qāla

أَنظِرْنِىٓ

Give me respite

anẓir'nī

إِلَىٰ

till

ilā

يَوْمِ

(the) Day

yawmi

يُبْعَثُونَ

they are raised up

yub'ʿathūna

١٤

[Satan] said, "Reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

(Allah) said

qāla

إِنَّكَ

Indeed, you

innaka

مِنَ

(are) of

mina

ٱلْمُنظَرِينَ

the ones given respite

l-munẓarīna

١٥

[Allāh] said, "Indeed, you are of those reprieved."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

(Shaitaan) said

qāla

فَبِمَآ

Because

fabimā

أَغْوَيْتَنِى

You have sent me astray

aghwaytanī

لَأَقْعُدَنَّ

surely I will sit

la-aqʿudanna

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

صِرَٰطَكَ

(on) Your path

ṣirāṭaka

ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ

the straight

l-mus'taqīma

١٦

[Satan] said, "Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them [i.e., mankind] on Your straight path.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

لَـَٔاتِيَنَّهُم

surely, I will come to them

laātiyannahum

مِّنۢ

from

min

بَيْنِ

before

bayni

أَيْدِيهِمْ

them

aydīhim

وَمِنْ

and from

wamin

خَلْفِهِمْ

behind them

khalfihim

وَعَنْ

and from

waʿan

أَيْمَـٰنِهِمْ

their right

aymānihim

وَعَن

and from

waʿan

شَمَآئِلِهِمْ ۖ

their left

shamāilihim

وَلَا

and not

walā

تَجِدُ

You (will) find

tajidu

أَكْثَرَهُمْ

most of them

aktharahum

شَـٰكِرِينَ

grateful

shākirīna

١٧

Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful [to You]."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

(Allah) said

qāla

ٱخْرُجْ

Get out

ukh'ruj

مِنْهَا

of it

min'hā

مَذْءُومًۭا

disgraced

madhūman

مَّدْحُورًۭا ۖ

and expelled

madḥūran

لَّمَن

Certainly, whoever

laman

تَبِعَكَ

follows you

tabiʿaka

مِنْهُمْ

among them

min'hum

لَأَمْلَأَنَّ

surely, I will fill

la-amla-anna

جَهَنَّمَ

Hell

jahannama

مِنكُمْ

with you

minkum

أَجْمَعِينَ

all

ajmaʿīna

١٨

[Allāh] said, "Depart from it [i.e., Paradise], reproached and expelled. Whoever follows you among them - I will surely fill Hell with you, all together."

— Saheeh International

وَيَـٰٓـَٔادَمُ

And O Adam

wayāādamu

ٱسْكُنْ

Dwell

us'kun

أَنتَ

you

anta

وَزَوْجُكَ

and your wife

wazawjuka

ٱلْجَنَّةَ

(in) the Garden

l-janata

فَكُلَا

and you both eat

fakulā

مِنْ

from

min

حَيْثُ

wherever

ḥaythu

شِئْتُمَا

you both wish

shi'tumā

وَلَا

but (do) not

walā

تَقْرَبَا

approach [both of you]

taqrabā

هَـٰذِهِ

this

hādhihi

ٱلشَّجَرَةَ

[the] tree

l-shajarata

فَتَكُونَا

lest you both be

fatakūnā

مِنَ

among

mina

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

١٩

And "O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat from wherever you will but do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers."

— Saheeh International

فَوَسْوَسَ

Then whispered

fawaswasa

لَهُمَا

to both of them

lahumā

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ

the Shaitaan

l-shayṭānu

لِيُبْدِىَ

to make apparent

liyub'diya

لَهُمَا

to both of them

lahumā

مَا

what

وُۥرِىَ

was concealed

wūriya

عَنْهُمَا

from both of them

ʿanhumā

مِن

of

min

سَوْءَٰتِهِمَا

their shame

sawātihimā

وَقَالَ

And he said

waqāla

مَا

(Did) not

نَهَىٰكُمَا

forbid you both

nahākumā

رَبُّكُمَا

your Lord

rabbukumā

عَنْ

from

ʿan

هَـٰذِهِ

this

hādhihi

ٱلشَّجَرَةِ

[the] tree

l-shajarati

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَن

that

an

تَكُونَا

you two become

takūnā

مَلَكَيْنِ

Angels

malakayni

أَوْ

or

aw

تَكُونَا

you two become

takūnā

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْخَـٰلِدِينَ

the immortals

l-khālidīna

٢٠

But Satan whispered to them to make apparent to them that which was concealed from them of their private parts. He said, "Your Lord did not forbid you this tree except that you become angels or become of the immortal."

— Saheeh International

وَقَاسَمَهُمَآ

And he swore (to) both of them

waqāsamahumā

إِنِّى

Indeed, I am

innī

لَكُمَا

to both of you

lakumā

لَمِنَ

among

lamina

ٱلنَّـٰصِحِينَ

the sincere advisors

l-nāṣiḥīna

٢١

And he swore [by Allāh] to them, "Indeed, I am to you from among the sincere advisors."

— Saheeh International

فَدَلَّىٰهُمَا

So he made both of them fall

fadallāhumā

بِغُرُورٍۢ ۚ

by deception

bighurūrin

فَلَمَّا

Then when

falammā

ذَاقَا

they both tasted

dhāqā

ٱلشَّجَرَةَ

the tree

l-shajarata

بَدَتْ

became apparent

badat

لَهُمَا

to both of them

lahumā

سَوْءَٰتُهُمَا

their shame

sawātuhumā

وَطَفِقَا

and they began

waṭafiqā

يَخْصِفَانِ

(to) fasten

yakhṣifāni

عَلَيْهِمَا

over themselves

ʿalayhimā

مِن

from

min

وَرَقِ

(the) leaves

waraqi

ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۖ

(of) the Garden

l-janati

وَنَادَىٰهُمَا

And called them both

wanādāhumā

رَبُّهُمَآ

their Lord

rabbuhumā

أَلَمْ

Did not

alam

أَنْهَكُمَا

I forbid you both

anhakumā

عَن

from

ʿan

تِلْكُمَا

this

til'kumā

ٱلشَّجَرَةِ

[the] tree

l-shajarati

وَأَقُل

and [I] say

wa-aqul

لَّكُمَآ

to both of you

lakumā

إِنَّ

that

inna

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ

[the] Shaitaan

l-shayṭāna

لَكُمَا

to both of you

lakumā

عَدُوٌّۭ

(is) an enemy

ʿaduwwun

مُّبِينٌۭ

open

mubīnun

٢٢

So he made them fall, through deception. And when they tasted of the tree, their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten together over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And their Lord called to them, "Did I not forbid you from that tree and tell you that Satan is to you a clear enemy?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَا

Both of them said

qālā

رَبَّنَا

Our Lord

rabbanā

ظَلَمْنَآ

we have wronged

ẓalamnā

أَنفُسَنَا

ourselves

anfusanā

وَإِن

and if

wa-in

لَّمْ

not

lam

تَغْفِرْ

You forgive

taghfir

لَنَا

[for] us

lanā

وَتَرْحَمْنَا

and have mercy (on) us

watarḥamnā

لَنَكُونَنَّ

surely, we will be

lanakūnanna

مِنَ

among

mina

ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ

the losers

l-khāsirīna

٢٣

They said, "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

(Allah) said

qāla

ٱهْبِطُوا۟

Get down

ih'biṭū

بَعْضُكُمْ

some of you

baʿḍukum

لِبَعْضٍ

to some others

libaʿḍin

عَدُوٌّۭ ۖ

(as) enemy

ʿaduwwun

وَلَكُمْ

And for you

walakum

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

مُسْتَقَرٌّۭ

(is) a dwelling place

mus'taqarrun

وَمَتَـٰعٌ

and livelihood

wamatāʿun

إِلَىٰ

for

ilā

حِينٍۢ

a time

ḥīnin

٢٤

[Allāh] said, "Descend, being to one another enemies. And for you on the earth is a place of settlement and enjoyment [i.e., provision] for a time."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

فِيهَا

In it

fīhā

تَحْيَوْنَ

you will live

taḥyawna

وَفِيهَا

and in it

wafīhā

تَمُوتُونَ

you will die

tamūtūna

وَمِنْهَا

and from it

wamin'hā

تُخْرَجُونَ

you will be brought forth

tukh'rajūna

٢٥

He said, "Therein you will live, and therein you will die, and from it you will be brought forth."

— Saheeh International

يَـٰبَنِىٓ

O Children

yābanī

ءَادَمَ

(of) Adam

ādama

قَدْ

Verily

qad

أَنزَلْنَا

We have sent down

anzalnā

عَلَيْكُمْ

to you

ʿalaykum

لِبَاسًۭا

clothing

libāsan

يُوَٰرِى

it covers

yuwārī

سَوْءَٰتِكُمْ

your shame

sawātikum

وَرِيشًۭا ۖ

and (as) an adornment

warīshan

وَلِبَاسُ

But the clothing

walibāsu

ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ

(of) [the] righteousness

l-taqwā

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

خَيْرٌۭ ۚ

(is) best

khayrun

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

مِنْ

(is) from

min

ءَايَـٰتِ

(the) Signs

āyāti

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

لَعَلَّهُمْ

so that they may

laʿallahum

يَذَّكَّرُونَ

remember

yadhakkarūna

٢٦

O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best. That is from the signs of Allāh that perhaps they will remember.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰبَنِىٓ

O Children

yābanī

ءَادَمَ

(of) Adam

ādama

لَا

(Let) not

يَفْتِنَنَّكُمُ

tempt you

yaftinannakumu

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ

[the] Shaitaan

l-shayṭānu

كَمَآ

as

kamā

أَخْرَجَ

he drove out

akhraja

أَبَوَيْكُم

your parents

abawaykum

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلْجَنَّةِ

Paradise

l-janati

يَنزِعُ

stripping

yanziʿu

عَنْهُمَا

from both of them

ʿanhumā

لِبَاسَهُمَا

libāsahumā

لِيُرِيَهُمَا

to show both of them

liyuriyahumā

سَوْءَٰتِهِمَآ ۗ

their shame

sawātihimā

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he

innahu

يَرَىٰكُمْ

sees you

yarākum

هُوَ

he

huwa

وَقَبِيلُهُۥ

and his tribe

waqabīluhu

مِنْ

from

min

حَيْثُ

where

ḥaythu

لَا

not

تَرَوْنَهُمْ ۗ

you see them

tarawnahum

إِنَّا

Indeed

innā

جَعَلْنَا

We have made

jaʿalnā

ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينَ

the devils

l-shayāṭīna

أَوْلِيَآءَ

friends

awliyāa

لِلَّذِينَ

of those who

lilladhīna

لَا

(do) not

يُؤْمِنُونَ

believe

yu'minūna

٢٧

O children of Adam, let not Satan tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise, stripping them of their clothing1 to show them their private parts. Indeed, he sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them. Indeed, We have made the devils allies to those who do not believe.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

فَعَلُوا۟

they do

faʿalū

فَـٰحِشَةًۭ

immorality

fāḥishatan

قَالُوا۟

they say

qālū

وَجَدْنَا

We found

wajadnā

عَلَيْهَآ

on it

ʿalayhā

ءَابَآءَنَا

our forefathers

ābāanā

وَٱللَّهُ

and Allah

wal-lahu

أَمَرَنَا

(has) ordered us

amaranā

بِهَا ۗ

of it

bihā

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَا

(does) not

يَأْمُرُ

order

yamuru

بِٱلْفَحْشَآءِ ۖ

immorality

bil-faḥshāi

أَتَقُولُونَ

Do you say

ataqūlūna

عَلَى

about

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

مَا

what

لَا

not

تَعْلَمُونَ

you know

taʿlamūna

٢٨

And when they commit an immorality, they say, "We found our fathers doing it, and Allāh has ordered us to do it." Say, "Indeed, Allāh does not order immorality. Do you say about Allāh that which you do not know?"

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

أَمَرَ

(Has been) ordered

amara

رَبِّى

(by) my Lord

rabbī

بِٱلْقِسْطِ ۖ

justice

bil-qis'ṭi

وَأَقِيمُوا۟

and set

wa-aqīmū

وُجُوهَكُمْ

your faces

wujūhakum

عِندَ

at

ʿinda

كُلِّ

every

kulli

مَسْجِدٍۢ

masjid

masjidin

وَٱدْعُوهُ

and invoke Him

wa-id'ʿūhu

مُخْلِصِينَ

(being) sincere

mukh'liṣīna

لَهُ

to Him

lahu

ٱلدِّينَ ۚ

(in) the religion

l-dīna

كَمَا

As

kamā

بَدَأَكُمْ

He originated you

bada-akum

تَعُودُونَ

(so) will you return

taʿūdūna

٢٩

Say, [O Muḥammad], "My Lord has ordered justice and that you direct yourselves [to the Qiblah] at every place [or time] of prostration, and invoke Him, sincere to Him in religion." Just as He originated you, you will return [to life] -

— Saheeh International

فَرِيقًا

A group

farīqan

هَدَىٰ

He guided

hadā

وَفَرِيقًا

and a group

wafarīqan

حَقَّ

deserved

ḥaqqa

عَلَيْهِمُ

[on] they

ʿalayhimu

ٱلضَّلَـٰلَةُ ۗ

the astraying

l-ḍalālatu

إِنَّهُمُ

Indeed, they

innahumu

ٱتَّخَذُوا۟

take

ittakhadhū

ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينَ

the devils

l-shayāṭīna

أَوْلِيَآءَ

(as) allies

awliyāa

مِن

from

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَيَحْسَبُونَ

while they think

wayaḥsabūna

أَنَّهُم

that they

annahum

مُّهْتَدُونَ

(are the) guided-ones

muh'tadūna

٣٠

A group [of you] He guided, and a group deserved [to be in] error. Indeed, they [i.e., the latter] had taken the devils as allies instead of Allāh while they thought that they were guided.

— Saheeh International

۞ يَـٰبَنِىٓ

O Children

yābanī

ءَادَمَ

(of) Adam

ādama

خُذُوا۟

Take

khudhū

زِينَتَكُمْ

your adornment

zīnatakum

عِندَ

at

ʿinda

كُلِّ

every

kulli

مَسْجِدٍۢ

masjid

masjidin

وَكُلُوا۟

and eat

wakulū

وَٱشْرَبُوا۟

and drink

wa-ish'rabū

وَلَا

but (do) not

walā

تُسْرِفُوٓا۟ ۚ

be extravagant

tus'rifū

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

لَا

(does) not

يُحِبُّ

love

yuḥibbu

ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ

the extravagant ones

l-mus'rifīna

٣١

O children of Adam, take your adornment [i.e., wear your clothing] at every masjid,1 and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.

— Saheeh International

Who

man

حَرَّمَ

has forbidden

ḥarrama

زِينَةَ

(the) adornment

zīnata

ٱللَّهِ

(from) Allah

l-lahi

ٱلَّتِىٓ

which

allatī

أَخْرَجَ

He has brought forth

akhraja

لِعِبَادِهِۦ

for His slaves

liʿibādihi

وَٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ

and the pure things

wal-ṭayibāti

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلرِّزْقِ ۚ

sustenance

l-riz'qi

قُلْ

Say

qul

هِىَ

They

hiya

لِلَّذِينَ

(are) for those who

lilladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

فِى

during

ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ

the life

l-ḥayati

ٱلدُّنْيَا

(of) the world

l-dun'yā

خَالِصَةًۭ

exclusively (for them)

khāliṣatan

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۗ

(of) Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

نُفَصِّلُ

We explain

nufaṣṣilu

ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ

the Signs

l-āyāti

لِقَوْمٍۢ

for (the) people

liqawmin

يَعْلَمُونَ

who know

yaʿlamūna

٣٢

Say, "Who has forbidden the adornment of [i.e., from] Allāh which He has produced for His servants and the good [lawful] things of provision?" Say, "They are for those who believed during the life of this world, exclusively [for them] on the Day of Resurrection." Thus do We detail the verses for a people who know.

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

حَرَّمَ

(had) forbidden

ḥarrama

رَبِّىَ

my Lord

rabbiya

ٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ

the shameful deeds

l-fawāḥisha

مَا

what

ظَهَرَ

(is) apparent

ẓahara

مِنْهَا

of it

min'hā

وَمَا

and what

wamā

بَطَنَ

is concealed

baṭana

وَٱلْإِثْمَ

and the sin

wal-ith'ma

وَٱلْبَغْىَ

and the oppression

wal-baghya

بِغَيْرِ

without

bighayri

ٱلْحَقِّ

[the] right

l-ḥaqi

وَأَن

and that

wa-an

تُشْرِكُوا۟

you associate (others)

tush'rikū

بِٱللَّهِ

with Allah

bil-lahi

مَا

what

لَمْ

not

lam

يُنَزِّلْ

He (has) sent down

yunazzil

بِهِۦ

of it

bihi

سُلْطَـٰنًۭا

any authority

sul'ṭānan

وَأَن

and that

wa-an

تَقُولُوا۟

you say

taqūlū

عَلَى

about

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

مَا

what

لَا

not

تَعْلَمُونَ

you know

taʿlamūna

٣٣

Say, "My Lord has only forbidden immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed - and sin,1 and oppression without right, and that you associate with Allāh that for which He has not sent down authority, and that you say about Allāh that which you do not know."

— Saheeh International

وَلِكُلِّ

And for every

walikulli

أُمَّةٍ

nation

ummatin

أَجَلٌۭ ۖ

(is a fixed) term

ajalun

فَإِذَا

So when

fa-idhā

جَآءَ

comes

jāa

أَجَلُهُمْ

their term

ajaluhum

لَا

(they can) not

يَسْتَأْخِرُونَ

seek to delay

yastakhirūna

سَاعَةًۭ ۖ

an hour

sāʿatan

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَسْتَقْدِمُونَ

seek to advance (it)

yastaqdimūna

٣٤

And for every nation is a [specified] term. So when their time has come, they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it].

— Saheeh International

يَـٰبَنِىٓ

O Children

yābanī

ءَادَمَ

(of) Adam

ādama

إِمَّا

If

immā

يَأْتِيَنَّكُمْ

come to you

yatiyannakum

رُسُلٌۭ

Messengers

rusulun

مِّنكُمْ

from you

minkum

يَقُصُّونَ

relating

yaquṣṣūna

عَلَيْكُمْ

to you

ʿalaykum

ءَايَـٰتِى ۙ

My Verses

āyātī

فَمَنِ

then whoever

famani

ٱتَّقَىٰ

fears Allah

ittaqā

وَأَصْلَحَ

and reforms

wa-aṣlaḥa

فَلَا

then no

falā

خَوْفٌ

fear

khawfun

عَلَيْهِمْ

on them

ʿalayhim

وَلَا

and not

walā

هُمْ

they

hum

يَحْزَنُونَ

will grieve

yaḥzanūna

٣٥

O children of Adam, if there come to you messengers from among you relating to you My verses [i.e., scriptures and laws], then whoever fears Allāh and reforms - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

But those who

wa-alladhīna

كَذَّبُوا۟

deny

kadhabū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا

Our Verses

biāyātinā

وَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟

and (are) arrogant

wa-is'takbarū

عَنْهَآ

towards them

ʿanhā

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

those

ulāika

أَصْحَـٰبُ

(are the) companions

aṣḥābu

ٱلنَّارِ ۖ

(of) the Fire

l-nāri

هُمْ

they

hum

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

خَـٰلِدُونَ

will abide forever

khālidūna

٣٦

But the ones who deny Our verses and are arrogant toward them - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.

— Saheeh International

فَمَنْ

Then who

faman

أَظْلَمُ

(is) more unjust

aẓlamu

مِمَّنِ

than (one) who

mimmani

ٱفْتَرَىٰ

invented

if'tarā

عَلَى

against

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

كَذِبًا

a lie

kadhiban

أَوْ

or

aw

كَذَّبَ

denies

kadhaba

بِـَٔايَـٰتِهِۦٓ ۚ

His Verses

biāyātihi

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

يَنَالُهُمْ

will reach them

yanāluhum

نَصِيبُهُم

their portion

naṣībuhum

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ۖ

the Book

l-kitābi

حَتَّىٰٓ

until

ḥattā

إِذَا

when

idhā

جَآءَتْهُمْ

comes to them

jāathum

رُسُلُنَا

Our messengers (Angels)

rusulunā

يَتَوَفَّوْنَهُمْ

(to) take them in death

yatawaffawnahum

قَالُوٓا۟

they say

qālū

أَيْنَ

Where are

ayna

مَا

those (whom)

كُنتُمْ

you used to

kuntum

تَدْعُونَ

invoke

tadʿūna

مِن

from

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ ۖ

Allah

l-lahi

قَالُوا۟

They say

qālū

ضَلُّوا۟

They strayed

ḍallū

عَنَّا

from us

ʿannā

وَشَهِدُوا۟

and they (will) testify

washahidū

عَلَىٰٓ

against

ʿalā

أَنفُسِهِمْ

themselves

anfusihim

أَنَّهُمْ

that they

annahum

كَانُوا۟

were

kānū

كَـٰفِرِينَ

disbelievers

kāfirīna

٣٧

And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allāh a lie or denies His verses? Those will attain their portion of the decree1 until, when Our messengers [i.e., angels] come to them to take them in death, they will say, "Where are those you used to invoke besides Allāh?" They will say, "They have departed from us," and will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers.

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He (will) say

qāla

ٱدْخُلُوا۟

Enter

ud'khulū

فِىٓ

among

أُمَمٍۢ

(the) nations

umamin

قَدْ

(who)

qad

خَلَتْ

passed away

khalat

مِن

from

min

قَبْلِكُم

before you

qablikum

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْجِنِّ

the jinn

l-jini

وَٱلْإِنسِ

and the men

wal-insi

فِى

in

ٱلنَّارِ ۖ

the Fire

l-nāri

كُلَّمَا

Every time

kullamā

دَخَلَتْ

entered

dakhalat

أُمَّةٌۭ

a nation

ummatun

لَّعَنَتْ

it cursed

laʿanat

أُخْتَهَا ۖ

its sister (nation)

ukh'tahā

حَتَّىٰٓ

until

ḥattā

إِذَا

when

idhā

ٱدَّارَكُوا۟

they had overtaken one another

iddārakū

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

جَمِيعًۭا

all

jamīʿan

قَالَتْ

(will) say

qālat

أُخْرَىٰهُمْ

(the) last of them

ukh'rāhum

لِأُولَىٰهُمْ

about the first of them

liūlāhum

رَبَّنَا

Our Lord

rabbanā

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

these

hāulāi

أَضَلُّونَا

misled us

aḍallūnā

فَـَٔاتِهِمْ

so give them

faātihim

عَذَابًۭا

punishment

ʿadhāban

ضِعْفًۭا

double

ḍiʿ'fan

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلنَّارِ ۖ

the Fire

l-nāri

قَالَ

He (will) say

qāla

لِكُلٍّۢ

For each

likullin

ضِعْفٌۭ

(is) a double

ḍiʿ'fun

وَلَـٰكِن

[and] but

walākin

لَّا

not

تَعْلَمُونَ

you know

taʿlamūna

٣٨

[Allāh] will say, "Enter among nations which had passed on before you of jinn and mankind into the Fire." Every time a nation enters, it will curse its sister1 until, when they have all overtaken one another therein, the last of them2 will say about the first of them,3 "Our Lord, these had misled us, so give them a double punishment of the Fire." He will say, "For each is double, but you do not know."

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَتْ

And (will) say

waqālat

أُولَىٰهُمْ

(the) first of them

ūlāhum

لِأُخْرَىٰهُمْ

to (the) last of them

li-ukh'rāhum

فَمَا

Then not

famā

كَانَ

is

kāna

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

عَلَيْنَا

upon us

ʿalaynā

مِن

any

min

فَضْلٍۢ

superiority

faḍlin

فَذُوقُوا۟

so taste

fadhūqū

ٱلْعَذَابَ

the punishment

l-ʿadhāba

بِمَا

for what

bimā

كُنتُمْ

you used to

kuntum

تَكْسِبُونَ

earn

taksibūna

٣٩

And the first of them will say to the last of them, "Then you had not any favor over us, so taste the punishment for what you used to earn."

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَذَّبُوا۟

denied

kadhabū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا

Our Verses

biāyātinā

وَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟

and (were) arrogant

wa-is'takbarū

عَنْهَا

towards them

ʿanhā

لَا

(will) not

تُفَتَّحُ

be opened

tufattaḥu

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

أَبْوَٰبُ

(the) doors

abwābu

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

(of) the heaven

l-samāi

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَدْخُلُونَ

they will enter

yadkhulūna

ٱلْجَنَّةَ

Paradise

l-janata

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

يَلِجَ

passes

yalija

ٱلْجَمَلُ

the camel

l-jamalu

فِى

through

سَمِّ

(the) eye

sammi

ٱلْخِيَاطِ ۚ

(of) the needle

l-khiyāṭi

وَكَذَٰلِكَ

And thus

wakadhālika

نَجْزِى

We recompense

najzī

ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

the criminals

l-muj'rimīna

٤٠

Indeed, those who deny Our verses and are arrogant toward them - the gates of Heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise until a camel enters into the eye of a needle [i.e., never]. And thus do We recompense the criminals.

— Saheeh International

لَهُم

For them

lahum

مِّن

of

min

جَهَنَّمَ

(the) Hell

jahannama

مِهَادٌۭ

(is) a bed

mihādun

وَمِن

and from

wamin

فَوْقِهِمْ

over them

fawqihim

غَوَاشٍۢ ۚ

coverings

ghawāshin

وَكَذَٰلِكَ

And thus

wakadhālika

نَجْزِى

We recompense

najzī

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

٤١

They will have from Hell a bed and over them coverings [of fire]. And thus do We recompense the wrongdoers.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

But those who

wa-alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

وَعَمِلُوا۟

and do

waʿamilū

ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ

[the] righteous deeds

l-ṣāliḥāti

لَا

not

نُكَلِّفُ

We burden

nukallifu

نَفْسًا

any soul

nafsan

إِلَّا

except

illā

وُسْعَهَآ

(to) its capacity

wus'ʿahā

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

أَصْحَـٰبُ

(are the) companions

aṣḥābu

ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۖ

(of) Paradise

l-janati

هُمْ

they

hum

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

خَـٰلِدُونَ

(will) abide forever

khālidūna

٤٢

But those who believed and did righteous deeds - We charge no soul except [within] its capacity. Those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide therein eternally.

— Saheeh International

وَنَزَعْنَا

And We will remove

wanazaʿnā

مَا

whatever

فِى

(is) in

صُدُورِهِم

their breasts

ṣudūrihim

مِّنْ

of

min

غِلٍّۢ

malice

ghillin

تَجْرِى

Flows

tajrī

مِن

from

min

تَحْتِهِمُ

underneath them

taḥtihimu

ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۖ

the rivers

l-anhāru

وَقَالُوا۟

And they will say

waqālū

ٱلْحَمْدُ

All the praise

l-ḥamdu

لِلَّهِ

(is) for Allah

lillahi

ٱلَّذِى

the One Who

alladhī

هَدَىٰنَا

guided us

hadānā

لِهَـٰذَا

to this

lihādhā

وَمَا

and not

wamā

كُنَّا

we were

kunnā

لِنَهْتَدِىَ

to receive guidance

linahtadiya

لَوْلَآ

if not

lawlā

أَنْ

[that]

an

هَدَىٰنَا

(had) guided us

hadānā

ٱللَّهُ ۖ

Allah

l-lahu

لَقَدْ

Certainly

laqad

جَآءَتْ

came

jāat

رُسُلُ

Messengers

rusulu

رَبِّنَا

(of) our Lord

rabbinā

بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ

with the truth

bil-ḥaqi

وَنُودُوٓا۟

And they will be addressed

wanūdū

أَن

[that]

an

تِلْكُمُ

This

til'kumu

ٱلْجَنَّةُ

(is) Paradise

l-janatu

أُورِثْتُمُوهَا

you have been made to inherit it

ūrith'tumūhā

بِمَا

for what

bimā

كُنتُمْ

you used to

kuntum

تَعْمَلُونَ

do

taʿmalūna

٤٣

And We will have removed whatever is within their breasts of resentment,1 [while] flowing beneath them are rivers. And they will say, "Praise to Allāh, who has guided us to this; and we would never have been guided if Allāh had not guided us. Certainly the messengers of our Lord had come with the truth." And they will be called, "This is Paradise, which you have been made to inherit for what you used to do."

— Saheeh International

وَنَادَىٰٓ

And will call out

wanādā

أَصْحَـٰبُ

(the) companions

aṣḥābu

ٱلْجَنَّةِ

(of) Paradise

l-janati

أَصْحَـٰبَ

(to the) companions

aṣḥāba

ٱلنَّارِ

(of) the Fire

l-nāri

أَن

that

an

قَدْ

Indeed

qad

وَجَدْنَا

we found

wajadnā

مَا

what

وَعَدَنَا

(had) promised us

waʿadanā

رَبُّنَا

our Lord

rabbunā

حَقًّۭا

true

ḥaqqan

فَهَلْ

So have

fahal

وَجَدتُّم

you found

wajadttum

مَّا

what

وَعَدَ

(was) promised

waʿada

رَبُّكُمْ

(by) your Lord

rabbukum

حَقًّۭا ۖ

(to be) true

ḥaqqan

قَالُوا۟

They will say

qālū

نَعَمْ ۚ

Yes

naʿam

فَأَذَّنَ

Then will announce

fa-adhana

مُؤَذِّنٌۢ

an announcer

mu-adhinun

بَيْنَهُمْ

among them

baynahum

أَن

[that]

an

لَّعْنَةُ

(The) curse

laʿnatu

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

عَلَى

(is) on

ʿalā

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

٤٤

And the companions of Paradise will call out to the companions of the Fire, "We have already found what our Lord promised us to be true. Have you found what your Lord promised to be true?" They will say, "Yes." Then an announcer will announce among them, "The curse of Allāh shall be upon the wrongdoers

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

يَصُدُّونَ

hinder

yaṣuddūna

عَن

from

ʿan

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَيَبْغُونَهَا

and seek in it

wayabghūnahā

عِوَجًۭا

crookedness

ʿiwajan

وَهُم

while they (are)

wahum

بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

concerning the Hereafter

bil-ākhirati

كَـٰفِرُونَ

disbelievers

kāfirūna

٤٥

Who averted [people] from the way of Allāh and sought to make it [seem] deviant while they were, concerning the Hereafter, disbelievers."

— Saheeh International

وَبَيْنَهُمَا

And between them

wabaynahumā

حِجَابٌۭ ۚ

(will be) a partition

ḥijābun

وَعَلَى

and on

waʿalā

ٱلْأَعْرَافِ

the heights

l-aʿrāfi

رِجَالٌۭ

(will be) men

rijālun

يَعْرِفُونَ

recognizing

yaʿrifūna

كُلًّۢا

all

kullan

بِسِيمَىٰهُمْ ۚ

by their marks

bisīmāhum

وَنَادَوْا۟

And they will call out

wanādaw

أَصْحَـٰبَ

(to the) companions

aṣḥāba

ٱلْجَنَّةِ

(of) Paradise

l-janati

أَن

that

an

سَلَـٰمٌ

Peace

salāmun

عَلَيْكُمْ ۚ

(be) upon you

ʿalaykum

لَمْ

Not

lam

يَدْخُلُوهَا

they have entered it

وَهُمْ

but they

wahum

يَطْمَعُونَ

hope

yaṭmaʿūna

٤٦

And between them will be a partition [i.e., wall], and on [its] elevations are men1 who recognize all2 by their mark. And they call out to the companions of Paradise, "Peace be upon you." They have not [yet] entered it, but they long intensely.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

صُرِفَتْ

are turned

ṣurifat

أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ

their eyes

abṣāruhum

تِلْقَآءَ

towards

til'qāa

أَصْحَـٰبِ

(the) companions

aṣḥābi

ٱلنَّارِ

(of) the Fire

l-nāri

قَالُوا۟

they (will) say

qālū

رَبَّنَا

Our Lord

rabbanā

لَا

(Do) not

تَجْعَلْنَا

place us

tajʿalnā

مَعَ

with

maʿa

ٱلْقَوْمِ

the people

l-qawmi

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

٤٧

And when their eyes are turned toward the companions of the Fire, they say, "Our Lord, do not place us with the wrongdoing people."

— Saheeh International

وَنَادَىٰٓ

And (will) call out

wanādā

أَصْحَـٰبُ

(the) companions

aṣḥābu

ٱلْأَعْرَافِ

(of) the heights

l-aʿrāfi

رِجَالًۭا

(to) men

rijālan

يَعْرِفُونَهُم

whom they recognize

yaʿrifūnahum

بِسِيمَىٰهُمْ

by their marks

bisīmāhum

قَالُوا۟

saying

qālū

مَآ

Not

أَغْنَىٰ

(has) availed

aghnā

عَنكُمْ

[to] you

ʿankum

جَمْعُكُمْ

your gathering

jamʿukum

وَمَا

and what

wamā

كُنتُمْ

you were

kuntum

تَسْتَكْبِرُونَ

arrogant (about)

tastakbirūna

٤٨

And the companions of the Elevations will call to men [within Hell] whom they recognize by their mark, saying, "Of no avail to you was your gathering1 and [the fact] that you were arrogant."

— Saheeh International

أَهَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

Are these

ahāulāi

ٱلَّذِينَ

the ones whom

alladhīna

أَقْسَمْتُمْ

you had sworn

aqsamtum

لَا

(that) not

يَنَالُهُمُ

(will) grant them

yanāluhumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

بِرَحْمَةٍ ۚ

Mercy

biraḥmatin

ٱدْخُلُوا۟

Enter

ud'khulū

ٱلْجَنَّةَ

Paradise

l-janata

لَا

(There will be) no

خَوْفٌ

fear

khawfun

عَلَيْكُمْ

upon you

ʿalaykum

وَلَآ

and not

walā

أَنتُمْ

you

antum

تَحْزَنُونَ

will grieve

taḥzanūna

٤٩

[Allāh will say], "Are these1 the ones whom you [inhabitants of Hell] swore that Allāh would never offer them mercy? Enter Paradise, [O people of the Elevations]. No fear will there be concerning you, nor will you grieve."

— Saheeh International

وَنَادَىٰٓ

And (will) call out

wanādā

أَصْحَـٰبُ

(the) companions

aṣḥābu

ٱلنَّارِ

(of) the Fire

l-nāri

أَصْحَـٰبَ

(to the) companions

aṣḥāba

ٱلْجَنَّةِ

(of) Paradise

l-janati

أَنْ

[that]

an

أَفِيضُوا۟

Pour

afīḍū

عَلَيْنَا

upon us

ʿalaynā

مِنَ

[of]

mina

ٱلْمَآءِ

(some) water

l-māi

أَوْ

or

aw

مِمَّا

of what

mimmā

رَزَقَكُمُ

(has been) provided (to) you

razaqakumu

ٱللَّهُ ۚ

(by) Allah

l-lahu

قَالُوٓا۟

They (will) say

qālū

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

حَرَّمَهُمَا

has forbidden both

ḥarramahumā

عَلَى

to

ʿalā

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

٥٠

And the companions of the Fire will call to the companions of Paradise, "Pour upon us some water or from whatever Allāh has provided you." They will say, "Indeed, Allāh has forbidden them both to the disbelievers

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

ٱتَّخَذُوا۟

took

ittakhadhū

دِينَهُمْ

their religion

dīnahum

لَهْوًۭا

(as) an amusement

lahwan

وَلَعِبًۭا

and play

walaʿiban

وَغَرَّتْهُمُ

and deluded them

wagharrathumu

ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ

the life

l-ḥayatu

ٱلدُّنْيَا ۚ

(of) the world

l-dun'yā

فَٱلْيَوْمَ

So today

fal-yawma

نَنسَىٰهُمْ

We forget them

nansāhum

كَمَا

as

kamā

نَسُوا۟

they forgot

nasū

لِقَآءَ

(the) meeting

liqāa

يَوْمِهِمْ

(of) their day

yawmihim

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

وَمَا

and [what]

wamā

كَانُوا۟

(as) they used to

kānū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا

with Our Verses

biāyātinā

يَجْحَدُونَ

they reject

yajḥadūna

٥١

Who took their religion as distraction and amusement and whom the worldly life deluded." So today We will forget them just as they forgot the meeting of this Day of theirs and for having rejected Our verses.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

جِئْنَـٰهُم

We had brought them

ji'nāhum

بِكِتَـٰبٍۢ

a Book

bikitābin

فَصَّلْنَـٰهُ

which We have explained

faṣṣalnāhu

عَلَىٰ

with

ʿalā

عِلْمٍ

knowledge

ʿil'min

هُدًۭى

as guidance

hudan

وَرَحْمَةًۭ

and mercy

waraḥmatan

لِّقَوْمٍۢ

for a people

liqawmin

يُؤْمِنُونَ

who believe

yu'minūna

٥٢

And We had certainly brought them a Book which We detailed by knowledge - as guidance and mercy to a people who believe.

— Saheeh International

هَلْ

Do

hal

يَنظُرُونَ

they wait

yanẓurūna

إِلَّا

except

illā

تَأْوِيلَهُۥ ۚ

(for) its fulfillment

tawīlahu

يَوْمَ

(The) Day

yawma

يَأْتِى

(will) come

yatī

تَأْوِيلُهُۥ

its fulfillment

tawīluhu

يَقُولُ

will say

yaqūlu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

نَسُوهُ

had forgotten it

nasūhu

مِن

from

min

قَبْلُ

before

qablu

قَدْ

Verily

qad

جَآءَتْ

had come

jāat

رُسُلُ

(the) Messengers

rusulu

رَبِّنَا

(of) our Lord

rabbinā

بِٱلْحَقِّ

with the truth

bil-ḥaqi

فَهَل

so are (there)

fahal

لَّنَا

for us

lanā

مِن

any

min

شُفَعَآءَ

intercessors

shufaʿāa

فَيَشْفَعُوا۟

so (that) they intercede

fayashfaʿū

لَنَآ

for us

lanā

أَوْ

or

aw

نُرَدُّ

we are sent back

nuraddu

فَنَعْمَلَ

so (that) we do (deeds)

fanaʿmala

غَيْرَ

other than

ghayra

ٱلَّذِى

that which

alladhī

كُنَّا

we used to

kunnā

نَعْمَلُ ۚ

do

naʿmalu

قَدْ

Verily

qad

خَسِرُوٓا۟

they lost

khasirū

أَنفُسَهُمْ

themselves

anfusahum

وَضَلَّ

and strayed

waḍalla

عَنْهُم

from them

ʿanhum

مَّا

what

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

يَفْتَرُونَ

invent

yaftarūna

٥٣

Do they await except its result?1 The Day its result comes, those who had ignored it before will say, "The messengers of our Lord had come with the truth, so are there [now] any intercessors to intercede for us or could we be sent back to do other than what we used to do?" They will have lost themselves, and lost from them is what they used to invent.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

رَبَّكُمُ

your Lord

rabbakumu

ٱللَّهُ

(is) Allah

l-lahu

ٱلَّذِى

the One Who

alladhī

خَلَقَ

created

khalaqa

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضَ

and the earth

wal-arḍa

فِى

in

سِتَّةِ

six

sittati

أَيَّامٍۢ

epochs

ayyāmin

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

ٱسْتَوَىٰ

He ascended

is'tawā

عَلَى

on

ʿalā

ٱلْعَرْشِ

the Throne

l-ʿarshi

يُغْشِى

He covers

yugh'shī

ٱلَّيْلَ

the night

al-layla

ٱلنَّهَارَ

(with) the day

l-nahāra

يَطْلُبُهُۥ

seeking it

yaṭlubuhu

حَثِيثًۭا

rapidly

ḥathīthan

وَٱلشَّمْسَ

and the sun

wal-shamsa

وَٱلْقَمَرَ

and the moon

wal-qamara

وَٱلنُّجُومَ

and the stars

wal-nujūma

مُسَخَّرَٰتٍۭ

subjected

musakharātin

بِأَمْرِهِۦٓ ۗ

by His command

bi-amrihi

أَلَا

Unquestionably

alā

لَهُ

for Him

lahu

ٱلْخَلْقُ

(is) the creation

l-khalqu

وَٱلْأَمْرُ ۗ

and the command

wal-amru

تَبَارَكَ

blessed

tabāraka

ٱللَّهُ

(is) Allah

l-lahu

رَبُّ

Lord

rabbu

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

٥٤

Indeed, your Lord is Allāh, who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne.1 He covers the night with the day, [another night] chasing it rapidly; and [He created] the sun, the moon, and the stars, subjected by His command. Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allāh, Lord of the worlds.

— Saheeh International

ٱدْعُوا۟

Call upon

id'ʿū

رَبَّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbakum

تَضَرُّعًۭا

humbly

taḍarruʿan

وَخُفْيَةً ۚ

and privately

wakhuf'yatan

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

لَا

(does) not

يُحِبُّ

love

yuḥibbu

ٱلْمُعْتَدِينَ

the transgressors

l-muʿ'tadīna

٥٥

Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors.1

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تُفْسِدُوا۟

cause corruption

tuf'sidū

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

إِصْلَـٰحِهَا

its reformation

iṣ'lāḥihā

وَٱدْعُوهُ

And call Him

wa-id'ʿūhu

خَوْفًۭا

(in) fear

khawfan

وَطَمَعًا ۚ

and hope

waṭamaʿan

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

رَحْمَتَ

(the) Mercy

raḥmata

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

قَرِيبٌۭ

(is) near

qarībun

مِّنَ

for

mina

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

the good-doers

l-muḥ'sinīna

٥٦

And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allāh is near to the doers of good.

— Saheeh International

وَهُوَ

And He

wahuwa

ٱلَّذِى

(is) the One Who

alladhī

يُرْسِلُ

sends

yur'silu

ٱلرِّيَـٰحَ

the winds

l-riyāḥa

بُشْرًۢا

(as) glad tidings

bush'ran

بَيْنَ

from

bayna

يَدَىْ

before

yaday

رَحْمَتِهِۦ ۖ

His Mercy

raḥmatihi

حَتَّىٰٓ

until

ḥattā

إِذَآ

when

idhā

أَقَلَّتْ

they have carried

aqallat

سَحَابًۭا

clouds

saḥāban

ثِقَالًۭا

heavy

thiqālan

سُقْنَـٰهُ

We drive them

suq'nāhu

لِبَلَدٍۢ

to a land

libaladin

مَّيِّتٍۢ

dead

mayyitin

فَأَنزَلْنَا

then We send down

fa-anzalnā

بِهِ

from it

bihi

ٱلْمَآءَ

the water

l-māa

فَأَخْرَجْنَا

then We bring forth

fa-akhrajnā

بِهِۦ

from it

bihi

مِن

(of)

min

كُلِّ

all (kinds)

kulli

ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ ۚ

(of) fruits

l-thamarāti

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

نُخْرِجُ

We will bring forth

nukh'riju

ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ

the dead

l-mawtā

لَعَلَّكُمْ

so that you may

laʿallakum

تَذَكَّرُونَ

take heed

tadhakkarūna

٥٧

And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy [i.e., rainfall] until, when they have carried heavy rainclouds, We drive them to a dead land and We send down rain therein and bring forth thereby [some] of all the fruits. Thus will We bring forth the dead; perhaps you may be reminded.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلْبَلَدُ

And the land

wal-baladu

ٱلطَّيِّبُ

[the] pure

l-ṭayibu

يَخْرُجُ

comes forth

yakhruju

نَبَاتُهُۥ

its vegetation

nabātuhu

بِإِذْنِ

by (the) permission

bi-idh'ni

رَبِّهِۦ ۖ

(of) its Lord

rabbihi

وَٱلَّذِى

but which

wa-alladhī

خَبُثَ

is bad

khabutha

لَا

(does) not

يَخْرُجُ

come forth

yakhruju

إِلَّا

except

illā

نَكِدًۭا ۚ

(with) difficulty

nakidan

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

نُصَرِّفُ

We explain

nuṣarrifu

ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ

the Signs

l-āyāti

لِقَوْمٍۢ

for a people

liqawmin

يَشْكُرُونَ

who are grateful

yashkurūna

٥٨

And the good land - its vegetation emerges by permission of its Lord; but that which is bad - nothing emerges except sparsely, with difficulty. Thus do We diversify the signs for a people who are grateful.

— Saheeh International

لَقَدْ

Certainly

laqad

أَرْسَلْنَا

We sent

arsalnā

نُوحًا

Nuh

nūḥan

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

قَوْمِهِۦ

his people

qawmihi

فَقَالَ

and he said

faqāla

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

ٱعْبُدُوا۟

Worship

uʿ'budū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

مَا

not

لَكُم

for you

lakum

مِّنْ

any

min

إِلَـٰهٍ

god

ilāhin

غَيْرُهُۥٓ

other than Him

ghayruhu

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أَخَافُ

[I] fear

akhāfu

عَلَيْكُمْ

for you

ʿalaykum

عَذَابَ

punishment

ʿadhāba

يَوْمٍ

(of the) Day

yawmin

عَظِيمٍۢ

Great

ʿaẓīmin

٥٩

We had certainly sent Noah to his people, and he said, "O my people, worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous Day."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

Said

qāla

ٱلْمَلَأُ

the chiefs

l-mala-u

مِن

of

min

قَوْمِهِۦٓ

his people

qawmihi

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

لَنَرَىٰكَ

surely see you

lanarāka

فِى

in

ضَلَـٰلٍۢ

error

ḍalālin

مُّبِينٍۢ

clear

mubīnin

٦٠

Said the eminent among his people, "Indeed, we see you in clear error."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

لَيْسَ

There is not

laysa

بِى

in me

ضَلَـٰلَةٌۭ

error

ḍalālatun

وَلَـٰكِنِّى

but I am

walākinnī

رَسُولٌۭ

a Messenger

rasūlun

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّ

(the) Lord

rabbi

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

٦١

[Noah] said, "O my people, there is not error in me, but I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds.

— Saheeh International

أُبَلِّغُكُمْ

I convey to you

uballighukum

رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ

the Messages

risālāti

رَبِّى

(of) my Lord

rabbī

وَأَنصَحُ

and [I] advise

wa-anṣaḥu

لَكُمْ

[to] you

lakum

وَأَعْلَمُ

and I know

wa-aʿlamu

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

مَا

what

لَا

not

تَعْلَمُونَ

you know

taʿlamūna

٦٢

I convey to you the messages of my Lord and advise you; and I know from Allāh what you do not know.

— Saheeh International

أَوَعَجِبْتُمْ

Do you wonder

awaʿajib'tum

أَن

that

an

جَآءَكُمْ

has come to you

jāakum

ذِكْرٌۭ

a reminder

dhik'run

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbikum

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

رَجُلٍۢ

a man

rajulin

مِّنكُمْ

among you

minkum

لِيُنذِرَكُمْ

that he may warn you

liyundhirakum

وَلِتَتَّقُوا۟

and that you may fear

walitattaqū

وَلَعَلَّكُمْ

and so that you may

walaʿallakum

تُرْحَمُونَ

receive mercy

tur'ḥamūna

٦٣

Then do you wonder that there has come to you a reminder from your Lord through a man from among you, that he may warn you and that you may fear Allāh so you might receive mercy?"

— Saheeh International

فَكَذَّبُوهُ

But they denied him

fakadhabūhu

فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُ

so We saved him

fa-anjaynāhu

وَٱلَّذِينَ

and those who

wa-alladhīna

مَعَهُۥ

(were) with him

maʿahu

فِى

in

ٱلْفُلْكِ

the ship

l-ful'ki

وَأَغْرَقْنَا

And We drowned

wa-aghraqnā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَذَّبُوا۟

denied

kadhabū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ ۚ

Our Verses

biāyātinā

إِنَّهُمْ

Indeed, they

innahum

كَانُوا۟

were

kānū

قَوْمًا

a people

qawman

عَمِينَ

blind

ʿamīna

٦٤

But they denied him, so We saved him and those who were with him in the ship. And We drowned those who denied Our signs. Indeed, they were a blind people.1

— Saheeh International

۞ وَإِلَىٰ

And to

wa-ilā

عَادٍ

Aad

ʿādin

أَخَاهُمْ

(We sent) their brother

akhāhum

هُودًۭا ۗ

Hud

hūdan

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

ٱعْبُدُوا۟

Worship

uʿ'budū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

مَا

not

لَكُم

for you

lakum

مِّنْ

any

min

إِلَـٰهٍ

god

ilāhin

غَيْرُهُۥٓ ۚ

other than Him

ghayruhu

أَفَلَا

Then will not

afalā

تَتَّقُونَ

you fear (Allah)

tattaqūna

٦٥

And to the ʿAad [We sent] their brother Hūd. He said, "O my people, worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him. Then will you not fear Him?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

Said

qāla

ٱلْمَلَأُ

the chiefs

l-mala-u

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

مِن

from

min

قَوْمِهِۦٓ

his people

qawmihi

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

لَنَرَىٰكَ

surely, see you

lanarāka

فِى

in

سَفَاهَةٍۢ

foolishness

safāhatin

وَإِنَّا

and indeed, we

wa-innā

لَنَظُنُّكَ

[we] think you

lanaẓunnuka

مِنَ

(are) of

mina

ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ

the liars

l-kādhibīna

٦٦

Said the eminent ones who disbelieved among his people, "Indeed, we see you in foolishness, and indeed, we think you are of the liars."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

لَيْسَ

There is not

laysa

بِى

in me

سَفَاهَةٌۭ

foolishness

safāhatun

وَلَـٰكِنِّى

but I am

walākinnī

رَسُولٌۭ

a Messenger

rasūlun

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّ

(the) Lord

rabbi

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

٦٧

[Hūd] said, "O my people, there is not foolishness in me, but I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds.

— Saheeh International

أُبَلِّغُكُمْ

I convey to you

uballighukum

رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ

Messages

risālāti

رَبِّى

(of) my Lord

rabbī

وَأَنَا۠

and I am

wa-anā

لَكُمْ

to you

lakum

نَاصِحٌ

an adviser

nāṣiḥun

أَمِينٌ

trustworthy

amīnun

٦٨

I convey to you the messages of my Lord, and I am to you a trustworthy adviser.

— Saheeh International

أَوَعَجِبْتُمْ

Do you wonder

awaʿajib'tum

أَن

that

an

جَآءَكُمْ

has come to you

jāakum

ذِكْرٌۭ

a reminder

dhik'run

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbikum

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

رَجُلٍۢ

a man

rajulin

مِّنكُمْ

among you

minkum

لِيُنذِرَكُمْ ۚ

that he may warn you

liyundhirakum

وَٱذْكُرُوٓا۟

And remember

wa-udh'kurū

إِذْ

when

idh

جَعَلَكُمْ

He made you

jaʿalakum

خُلَفَآءَ

successors

khulafāa

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

قَوْمِ

(the) people

qawmi

نُوحٍۢ

(of) Nuh

nūḥin

وَزَادَكُمْ

and increased you

wazādakum

فِى

in

ٱلْخَلْقِ

the stature

l-khalqi

بَصْۜطَةًۭ ۖ

extensively

baṣ'ṭatan

فَٱذْكُرُوٓا۟

So remember

fa-udh'kurū

ءَالَآءَ

(the) Bounties

ālāa

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

لَعَلَّكُمْ

so that you may

laʿallakum

تُفْلِحُونَ

succeed

tuf'liḥūna

٦٩

Then do you wonder that there has come to you a reminder from your Lord through a man from among you, that he may warn you? And remember when He made you successors after the people of Noah and increased you in stature extensively. So remember the favors of Allāh that you might succeed."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

أَجِئْتَنَا

Have you come to us

aji'tanā

لِنَعْبُدَ

that we (should) worship

linaʿbuda

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَحْدَهُۥ

Alone

waḥdahu

وَنَذَرَ

and we forsake

wanadhara

مَا

what

كَانَ

used to

kāna

يَعْبُدُ

worship

yaʿbudu

ءَابَآؤُنَا ۖ

our forefathers

ābāunā

فَأْتِنَا

Then bring us

fatinā

بِمَا

of what

bimā

تَعِدُنَآ

you promise us

taʿidunā

إِن

if

in

كُنتَ

you are

kunta

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

the truthful

l-ṣādiqīna

٧٠

They said, "Have you come to us that we should worship Allāh alone and leave what our fathers have worshipped? Then bring us what you promise us,1 if you should be of the truthful."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

قَدْ

Verily

qad

وَقَعَ

has fallen

waqaʿa

عَلَيْكُم

upon you

ʿalaykum

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbikum

رِجْسٌۭ

punishment

rij'sun

وَغَضَبٌ ۖ

and anger

waghaḍabun

أَتُجَـٰدِلُونَنِى

Do you dispute with me

atujādilūnanī

فِىٓ

concerning

أَسْمَآءٍۢ

names

asmāin

سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ

you have named them

sammaytumūhā

أَنتُمْ

you

antum

وَءَابَآؤُكُم

and your forefathers

waābāukum

مَّا

Not

نَزَّلَ

(has been) sent down

nazzala

ٱللَّهُ

(by) Allah

l-lahu

بِهَا

for it

bihā

مِن

any

min

سُلْطَـٰنٍۢ ۚ

authority

sul'ṭānin

فَٱنتَظِرُوٓا۟

Then wait

fa-intaẓirū

إِنِّى

indeed, I am

innī

مَعَكُم

with you

maʿakum

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُنتَظِرِينَ

the ones who wait

l-muntaẓirīna

٧١

[Hūd] said, "Already have defilement and anger fallen upon you from your Lord. Do you dispute with me concerning [mere] names you have named them,1 you and your fathers, for which Allāh has not sent down any authority? Then wait; indeed, I am with you among those who wait."

— Saheeh International

فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُ

So We saved him

fa-anjaynāhu

وَٱلَّذِينَ

and those

wa-alladhīna

مَعَهُۥ

with him

maʿahu

بِرَحْمَةٍۢ

by Mercy

biraḥmatin

مِّنَّا

from Us

minnā

وَقَطَعْنَا

And We cut off

waqaṭaʿnā

دَابِرَ

the roots

dābira

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

كَذَّبُوا۟

denied

kadhabū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا ۖ

Our Signs

biāyātinā

وَمَا

and not

wamā

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

مُؤْمِنِينَ

believers

mu'minīna

٧٢

So We saved him and those with him by mercy from Us. And We eliminated those who denied Our signs, and they were not [at all] believers.

— Saheeh International

وَإِلَىٰ

And to

wa-ilā

ثَمُودَ

Thamud

thamūda

أَخَاهُمْ

(We sent) their brother

akhāhum

صَـٰلِحًۭا ۗ

Salih

ṣāliḥan

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

ٱعْبُدُوا۟

Worship

uʿ'budū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

مَا

not

لَكُم

for you

lakum

مِّنْ

any

min

إِلَـٰهٍ

god

ilāhin

غَيْرُهُۥ ۖ

other than Him

ghayruhu

قَدْ

Verily

qad

جَآءَتْكُم

has come to you

jāatkum

بَيِّنَةٌۭ

a clear proof

bayyinatun

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكُمْ ۖ

your Lord

rabbikum

هَـٰذِهِۦ

This

hādhihi

نَاقَةُ

(is) a she-camel

nāqatu

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

لَكُمْ

(it is) for you

lakum

ءَايَةًۭ ۖ

a Sign

āyatan

فَذَرُوهَا

So you leave her

fadharūhā

تَأْكُلْ

(to) eat

takul

فِىٓ

on

أَرْضِ

(the) earth

arḍi

ٱللَّهِ ۖ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَمَسُّوهَا

touch her

tamassūhā

بِسُوٓءٍۢ

with harm

bisūin

فَيَأْخُذَكُمْ

lest seizes you

fayakhudhakum

عَذَابٌ

a punishment

ʿadhābun

أَلِيمٌۭ

painful

alīmun

٧٣

And to the Thamūd [We sent] their brother Ṣāliḥ. He said, "O my people, worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord. This is the she-camel of Allāh [sent] to you as a sign. So leave her to eat within Allāh's land and do not touch her with harm, lest there seize you a painful punishment.

— Saheeh International

وَٱذْكُرُوٓا۟

And remember

wa-udh'kurū

إِذْ

when

idh

جَعَلَكُمْ

He made you

jaʿalakum

خُلَفَآءَ

successors

khulafāa

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

عَادٍۢ

Aad

ʿādin

وَبَوَّأَكُمْ

and settled you

wabawwa-akum

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

تَتَّخِذُونَ

You take

tattakhidhūna

مِن

from

min

سُهُولِهَا

its plains

suhūlihā

قُصُورًۭا

palaces

quṣūran

وَتَنْحِتُونَ

and you carve out

watanḥitūna

ٱلْجِبَالَ

the mountains

l-jibāla

بُيُوتًۭا ۖ

(as) homes

buyūtan

فَٱذْكُرُوٓا۟

So remember

fa-udh'kurū

ءَالَآءَ

(the) Bounties

ālāa

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَعْثَوْا۟

act wickedly

taʿthaw

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

(the) earth

l-arḍi

مُفْسِدِينَ

spreading corruption

muf'sidīna

٧٤

And remember when He made you successors after the ʿAad and settled you in the land, [and] you take for yourselves palaces from its plains and carve from the mountains, homes. Then remember the favors of Allāh and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

Said

qāla

ٱلْمَلَأُ

the chiefs

l-mala-u

ٱلَّذِينَ

those

alladhīna

ٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟

(who) were arrogant

is'takbarū

مِن

among

min

قَوْمِهِۦ

his people

qawmihi

لِلَّذِينَ

to those who

lilladhīna

ٱسْتُضْعِفُوا۟

were oppressed

us'tuḍ'ʿifū

لِمَنْ

[to] those who

liman

ءَامَنَ

believed

āmana

مِنْهُمْ

among them

min'hum

أَتَعْلَمُونَ

Do you know

ataʿlamūna

أَنَّ

that

anna

صَـٰلِحًۭا

Salih

ṣāliḥan

مُّرْسَلٌۭ

(is the) one sent

mur'salun

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّهِۦ ۚ

his Lord

rabbihi

قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

بِمَآ

in what

bimā

أُرْسِلَ

he has been sent

ur'sila

بِهِۦ

with [it]

bihi

مُؤْمِنُونَ

(are) believers

mu'minūna

٧٥

Said the eminent ones who were arrogant among his people to those who were oppressed - to those who believed among them, "Do you [actually] know that Ṣāliḥ is sent from his Lord?" They said, "Indeed we, in that with which he was sent, are believers."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

Said

qāla

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ٱسْتَكْبَرُوٓا۟

were arrogant

is'takbarū

إِنَّا

Indeed we

innā

بِٱلَّذِىٓ

in that which

bi-alladhī

ءَامَنتُم

you believe

āmantum

بِهِۦ

in it

bihi

كَـٰفِرُونَ

(are) disbelievers

kāfirūna

٧٦

Said those who were arrogant, "Indeed we, in that which you have believed, are disbelievers."

— Saheeh International

فَعَقَرُوا۟

Then they hamstrung

faʿaqarū

ٱلنَّاقَةَ

the she-camel

l-nāqata

وَعَتَوْا۟

and (were) insolent

waʿataw

عَنْ

towards

ʿan

أَمْرِ

(the) command

amri

رَبِّهِمْ

(of) their Lord

rabbihim

وَقَالُوا۟

and they said

waqālū

يَـٰصَـٰلِحُ

O Salih

yāṣāliḥu

ٱئْتِنَا

Bring us

i'tinā

بِمَا

what

bimā

تَعِدُنَآ

you promise us

taʿidunā

إِن

if

in

كُنتَ

you are

kunta

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

the Messengers

l-mur'salīna

٧٧

So they hamstrung the she-camel and were insolent toward the command of their Lord and said, "O Ṣāliḥ, bring us what you promise us, if you should be of the messengers."

— Saheeh International

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ

So seized them

fa-akhadhathumu

ٱلرَّجْفَةُ

the earthquake

l-rajfatu

فَأَصْبَحُوا۟

then they became

fa-aṣbaḥū

فِى

in

دَارِهِمْ

their homes

dārihim

جَـٰثِمِينَ

fallen prone

jāthimīna

٧٨

So the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone.

— Saheeh International

فَتَوَلَّىٰ

So he turned away

fatawallā

عَنْهُمْ

from them

ʿanhum

وَقَالَ

and he said

waqāla

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

لَقَدْ

Verily

laqad

أَبْلَغْتُكُمْ

I have conveyed to you

ablaghtukum

رِسَالَةَ

(the) Message

risālata

رَبِّى

(of) my Lord

rabbī

وَنَصَحْتُ

and [I] advised

wanaṣaḥtu

لَكُمْ

[to] you

lakum

وَلَـٰكِن

but

walākin

لَّا

not

تُحِبُّونَ

you like

tuḥibbūna

ٱلنَّـٰصِحِينَ

the advisers

l-nāṣiḥīna

٧٩

And he [i.e., Ṣāliḥ] turned away from them and said, "O my people, I had certainly conveyed to you the message of my Lord and advised you, but you do not like advisors."

— Saheeh International

وَلُوطًا

And Lut

walūṭan

إِذْ

when

idh

قَالَ

he said

qāla

لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ

to his people

liqawmihi

أَتَأْتُونَ

Do you commit

atatūna

ٱلْفَـٰحِشَةَ

(such) immorality

l-fāḥishata

مَا

not

سَبَقَكُم

has preceded you

sabaqakum

بِهَا

therein

bihā

مِنْ

any

min

أَحَدٍۢ

one

aḥadin

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

٨٠

And [We had sent] Lot when he said to his people, "Do you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds [i.e., peoples]?

— Saheeh International

إِنَّكُمْ

Indeed, you

innakum

لَتَأْتُونَ

you approach

latatūna

ٱلرِّجَالَ

the men

l-rijāla

شَهْوَةًۭ

lustfully

shahwatan

مِّن

from

min

دُونِ

instead of

dūni

ٱلنِّسَآءِ ۚ

the women

l-nisāi

بَلْ

Nay

bal

أَنتُمْ

you

antum

قَوْمٌۭ

(are) a people

qawmun

مُّسْرِفُونَ

(who) commit excesses

mus'rifūna

٨١

Indeed, you approach men with desire, instead of women. Rather, you are a transgressing people."

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كَانَ

was

kāna

جَوَابَ

(the) answer

jawāba

قَوْمِهِۦٓ

(of) his people

qawmihi

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَن

that

an

قَالُوٓا۟

they said

qālū

أَخْرِجُوهُم

Drive them out

akhrijūhum

مِّن

of

min

قَرْيَتِكُمْ ۖ

your town

qaryatikum

إِنَّهُمْ

Indeed, they

innahum

أُنَاسٌۭ

(are) people

unāsun

يَتَطَهَّرُونَ

who keep themselves pure

yataṭahharūna

٨٢

But the answer of his people was only that they said, "Evict them from your city! Indeed, they are men who keep themselves pure."

— Saheeh International

فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُ

So We saved him

fa-anjaynāhu

وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ

and his family

wa-ahlahu

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ

his wife

im'ra-atahu

كَانَتْ

she was

kānat

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ

those who stayed behind

l-ghābirīna

٨٣

So We saved him and his family, except for his wife; she was of those who remained [with the evildoers].

— Saheeh International

وَأَمْطَرْنَا

And We showered

wa-amṭarnā

عَلَيْهِم

upon them

ʿalayhim

مَّطَرًۭا ۖ

a rain

maṭaran

فَٱنظُرْ

So see

fa-unẓur

كَيْفَ

how

kayfa

كَانَ

was

kāna

عَـٰقِبَةُ

(the) end

ʿāqibatu

ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

(of) the criminals

l-muj'rimīna

٨٤

And We rained upon them a rain [of stones]. Then see how was the end of the criminals.

— Saheeh International

وَإِلَىٰ

And to

wa-ilā

مَدْيَنَ

Madyan

madyana

أَخَاهُمْ

his brother

akhāhum

شُعَيْبًۭا ۗ

Shuaib

shuʿayban

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

ٱعْبُدُوا۟

Worship

uʿ'budū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

مَا

not

لَكُم

for you

lakum

مِّنْ

any

min

إِلَـٰهٍ

god

ilāhin

غَيْرُهُۥ ۖ

other than Him

ghayruhu

قَدْ

Verily

qad

جَآءَتْكُم

has came to you

jāatkum

بَيِّنَةٌۭ

a clear proof

bayyinatun

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكُمْ ۖ

your Lord

rabbikum

فَأَوْفُوا۟

So give full

fa-awfū

ٱلْكَيْلَ

[the] measure

l-kayla

وَٱلْمِيزَانَ

and the weight

wal-mīzāna

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَبْخَسُوا۟

deprive

tabkhasū

ٱلنَّاسَ

[the] people

l-nāsa

أَشْيَآءَهُمْ

in their things

ashyāahum

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تُفْسِدُوا۟

cause corruption

tuf'sidū

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

إِصْلَـٰحِهَا ۚ

its reformation

iṣ'lāḥihā

ذَٰلِكُمْ

That

dhālikum

خَيْرٌۭ

(is) better

khayrun

لَّكُمْ

for you

lakum

إِن

if

in

كُنتُم

you are

kuntum

مُّؤْمِنِينَ

believers

mu'minīna

٨٥

And to [the people of] Madyan [We sent] their brother Shuʿayb. He said, "O my people, worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord. So fulfill the measure and weight and do not deprive people of their due and cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. That is better for you, if you should be believers.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَقْعُدُوا۟

sit

taqʿudū

بِكُلِّ

on every

bikulli

صِرَٰطٍۢ

path

ṣirāṭin

تُوعِدُونَ

threatening

tūʿidūna

وَتَصُدُّونَ

and hindering

wataṣuddūna

عَن

from

ʿan

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

مَنْ

(those) who

man

ءَامَنَ

believe

āmana

بِهِۦ

in Him

bihi

وَتَبْغُونَهَا

and seeking (to make) it

watabghūnahā

عِوَجًۭا ۚ

crooked

ʿiwajan

وَٱذْكُرُوٓا۟

And remember

wa-udh'kurū

إِذْ

when

idh

كُنتُمْ

you were

kuntum

قَلِيلًۭا

few

qalīlan

فَكَثَّرَكُمْ ۖ

and He increased you

fakatharakum

وَٱنظُرُوا۟

And see

wa-unẓurū

كَيْفَ

how

kayfa

كَانَ

was

kāna

عَـٰقِبَةُ

(the) end

ʿāqibatu

ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ

(of) the corrupters

l-muf'sidīna

٨٦

And do not sit on every path, threatening and averting from the way of Allāh those who believe in Him, seeking to make it [seem] deviant. And remember when you were few and He increased you. And see how was the end of the corrupters.

— Saheeh International

وَإِن

And if

wa-in

كَانَ

(there) is

kāna

طَآئِفَةٌۭ

a group

ṭāifatun

مِّنكُمْ

among you

minkum

ءَامَنُوا۟

(who has) believed

āmanū

بِٱلَّذِىٓ

in that which

bi-alladhī

أُرْسِلْتُ

I have been sent

ur'sil'tu

بِهِۦ

with [it]

bihi

وَطَآئِفَةٌۭ

and a group

waṭāifatun

لَّمْ

not

lam

يُؤْمِنُوا۟

they believe

yu'minū

فَٱصْبِرُوا۟

then be patient

fa-iṣ'birū

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

يَحْكُمَ

judges

yaḥkuma

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

بَيْنَنَا ۚ

between us

baynanā

وَهُوَ

And He

wahuwa

خَيْرُ

(is the) Best

khayru

ٱلْحَـٰكِمِينَ

(of) [the] Judges

l-ḥākimīna

٨٧

And if there should be a group among you who has believed in that with which I have been sent and a group that has not believed, then be patient until Allāh judges between us. And He is the best of judges."

— Saheeh International

۞ قَالَ

Said

qāla

ٱلْمَلَأُ

the chiefs

l-mala-u

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

ٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟

were arrogant

is'takbarū

مِن

among

min

قَوْمِهِۦ

his people

qawmihi

لَنُخْرِجَنَّكَ

We will surely drive you out

lanukh'rijannaka

يَـٰشُعَيْبُ

O Shuaib

yāshuʿaybu

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

(have) believed

āmanū

مَعَكَ

with you

maʿaka

مِن

from

min

قَرْيَتِنَآ

our city

qaryatinā

أَوْ

or

aw

لَتَعُودُنَّ

you must return

lataʿūdunna

فِى

to

مِلَّتِنَا ۚ

our religion

millatinā

قَالَ

He said

qāla

أَوَلَوْ

Even if

awalaw

كُنَّا

we are

kunnā

كَـٰرِهِينَ

(the) ones who hate (it)

kārihīna

٨٨

Said the eminent ones who were arrogant among his people, "We will surely evict you, O Shuʿayb, and those who have believed with you from our city, or you must return to our religion." He said, "Even if we were unwilling?

— Saheeh International

قَدِ

Verily

qadi

ٱفْتَرَيْنَا

we would have fabricated

if'taraynā

عَلَى

against

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

كَذِبًا

a lie

kadhiban

إِنْ

if

in

عُدْنَا

we returned

ʿud'nā

فِى

in

مِلَّتِكُم

your religion

millatikum

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

إِذْ

[when]

idh

نَجَّىٰنَا

saved us

najjānā

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

مِنْهَا ۚ

from it

min'hā

وَمَا

And not

wamā

يَكُونُ

it is

yakūnu

لَنَآ

for us

lanā

أَن

that

an

نَّعُودَ

we return

naʿūda

فِيهَآ

in it

fīhā

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَن

that

an

يَشَآءَ

wills

yashāa

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

رَبُّنَا ۚ

our Lord

rabbunā

وَسِعَ

Encompasses

wasiʿa

رَبُّنَا

(by) Our Lord

rabbunā

كُلَّ

every

kulla

شَىْءٍ

thing

shayin

عِلْمًا ۚ

(in) knowledge

ʿil'man

عَلَى

Upon

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

تَوَكَّلْنَا ۚ

we put our trust

tawakkalnā

رَبَّنَا

Our Lord

rabbanā

ٱفْتَحْ

Decide

if'taḥ

بَيْنَنَا

between us

baynanā

وَبَيْنَ

and between

wabayna

قَوْمِنَا

our people

qawminā

بِٱلْحَقِّ

in truth

bil-ḥaqi

وَأَنتَ

and You

wa-anta

خَيْرُ

(are the) Best

khayru

ٱلْفَـٰتِحِينَ

(of) those who Decide

l-fātiḥīna

٨٩

We would have invented against Allāh a lie if we returned to your religion after Allāh had saved us from it. And it is not for us to return to it except that Allāh, our Lord, should will. Our Lord has encompassed all things in knowledge. Upon Allāh we have relied. Our Lord, decide between us and our people in truth, and You are the best of those who give decision."

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَ

And said

waqāla

ٱلْمَلَأُ

the chiefs

l-mala-u

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

مِن

among

min

قَوْمِهِۦ

his people

qawmihi

لَئِنِ

If

la-ini

ٱتَّبَعْتُمْ

you follow

ittabaʿtum

شُعَيْبًا

Shuaib

shuʿayban

إِنَّكُمْ

indeed, you

innakum

إِذًۭا

then

idhan

لَّخَـٰسِرُونَ

(will be) certainly losers

lakhāsirūna

٩٠

Said the eminent ones who disbelieved among his people, "If you should follow Shuʿayb, indeed, you would then be losers."

— Saheeh International

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ

Then seized them

fa-akhadhathumu

ٱلرَّجْفَةُ

the earthquake

l-rajfatu

فَأَصْبَحُوا۟

then they became

fa-aṣbaḥū

فِى

in

دَارِهِمْ

their home(s)

dārihim

جَـٰثِمِينَ

fallen prone

jāthimīna

٩١

So the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone.

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

كَذَّبُوا۟

denied

kadhabū

شُعَيْبًۭا

Shuaib

shuʿayban

كَأَن

(became) as if

ka-an

لَّمْ

not

lam

يَغْنَوْا۟

they (had) lived

yaghnaw

فِيهَا ۚ

therein

fīhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

كَذَّبُوا۟

denied

kadhabū

شُعَيْبًۭا

Shuaib

shuʿayban

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

هُمُ

them

humu

ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ

the losers

l-khāsirīna

٩٢

Those who denied Shuʿayb - it was as though they had never resided there. Those who denied Shuʿayb - it was they who were the losers.

— Saheeh International

فَتَوَلَّىٰ

So he turned away

fatawallā

عَنْهُمْ

from them

ʿanhum

وَقَالَ

and said

waqāla

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

لَقَدْ

Verily

laqad

أَبْلَغْتُكُمْ

I (have) conveyed to you

ablaghtukum

رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ

(the) Messages

risālāti

رَبِّى

(of) my Lord

rabbī

وَنَصَحْتُ

and advised

wanaṣaḥtu

لَكُمْ ۖ

[to] you

lakum

فَكَيْفَ

So how could

fakayfa

ءَاسَىٰ

I grieve

āsā

عَلَىٰ

for

ʿalā

قَوْمٍۢ

a people

qawmin

كَـٰفِرِينَ

(who are) disbelievers

kāfirīna

٩٣

And he [i.e., Shuʿayb] turned away from them and said, "O my people, I had certainly conveyed to you the messages of my Lord and advised you, so how could I grieve for a disbelieving people?"

— Saheeh International

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَرْسَلْنَا

We sent

arsalnā

فِى

in

قَرْيَةٍۢ

a city

qaryatin

مِّن

any

min

نَّبِىٍّ

Prophet

nabiyyin

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَخَذْنَآ

We seized

akhadhnā

أَهْلَهَا

its people

ahlahā

بِٱلْبَأْسَآءِ

with adversity

bil-basāi

وَٱلضَّرَّآءِ

and hardship

wal-ḍarāi

لَعَلَّهُمْ

so that they may

laʿallahum

يَضَّرَّعُونَ

(become) humble

yaḍḍarraʿūna

٩٤

And We sent to no city a prophet [who was denied] except that We seized its people with poverty and hardship that they might humble themselves [to Allāh].

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

بَدَّلْنَا

We changed

baddalnā

مَكَانَ

(in) place

makāna

ٱلسَّيِّئَةِ

(of) the bad

l-sayi-ati

ٱلْحَسَنَةَ

the good

l-ḥasanata

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

عَفَوا۟

they increased

ʿafaw

وَّقَالُوا۟

and said

waqālū

قَدْ

Verily

qad

مَسَّ

(had) touched

massa

ءَابَآءَنَا

our forefathers

ābāanā

ٱلضَّرَّآءُ

the adversity

l-ḍarāu

وَٱلسَّرَّآءُ

and the ease

wal-sarāu

فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُم

So We seized them

fa-akhadhnāhum

بَغْتَةًۭ

suddenly

baghtatan

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

لَا

(did) not

يَشْعُرُونَ

perceive

yashʿurūna

٩٥

Then We exchanged in place of the bad [condition], good, until they increased [and prospered] and said, "Our fathers [also] were touched with hardship and ease."1 So We seized them suddenly while they did not perceive.2

— Saheeh International

وَلَوْ

And if

walaw

أَنَّ

[that]

anna

أَهْلَ

people

ahla

ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ

(of) the cities

l-qurā

ءَامَنُوا۟

(had) believed

āmanū

وَٱتَّقَوْا۟

and feared Allah

wa-ittaqaw

لَفَتَحْنَا

surely We (would have) opened

lafataḥnā

عَلَيْهِم

upon them

ʿalayhim

بَرَكَـٰتٍۢ

blessings

barakātin

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

the heaven

l-samāi

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

وَلَـٰكِن

but

walākin

كَذَّبُوا۟

they denied

kadhabū

فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُم

So We seized them

fa-akhadhnāhum

بِمَا

for what

bimā

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

يَكْسِبُونَ

earn

yaksibūna

٩٦

And if only the people of the cities had believed and feared Allāh, We would have opened [i.e., bestowed] upon them blessings from the heaven and the earth; but they denied [the messengers], so We seized them for what they were earning.1

— Saheeh International

أَفَأَمِنَ

Then did feel secure

afa-amina

أَهْلُ

(the) people

ahlu

ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ

(of) the cities

l-qurā

أَن

that

an

يَأْتِيَهُم

comes to them

yatiyahum

بَأْسُنَا

Our punishment

basunā

بَيَـٰتًۭا

(at) night

bayātan

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

نَآئِمُونَ

(were) asleep

nāimūna

٩٧

Then, did the people of the cities feel secure from Our punishment coming to them at night while they were asleep?

— Saheeh International

أَوَأَمِنَ

Or felt secure

awa-amina

أَهْلُ

(the) people

ahlu

ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ

(of) the cities

l-qurā

أَن

that

an

يَأْتِيَهُم

comes to them

yatiyahum

بَأْسُنَا

Our punishment

basunā

ضُحًۭى

(in) daylight

ḍuḥan

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

يَلْعَبُونَ

(were) playing

yalʿabūna

٩٨

Or did the people of the cities feel secure from Our punishment coming to them in the morning while they were at play?1

— Saheeh International

أَفَأَمِنُوا۟

Then did they feel secure

afa-aminū

مَكْرَ

(from the) plan

makra

ٱللَّهِ ۚ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

فَلَا

But not

falā

يَأْمَنُ

feel secure

yamanu

مَكْرَ

(from the) plan

makra

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلْقَوْمُ

the people

l-qawmu

ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ

(who are) the losers

l-khāsirūna

٩٩

Then, did they feel secure from the plan of Allāh? But no one feels secure from the plan of Allāh except the losing people.

— Saheeh International

أَوَلَمْ

Would it not

awalam

يَهْدِ

guide

yahdi

لِلَّذِينَ

[for] those who

lilladhīna

يَرِثُونَ

inherit

yarithūna

ٱلْأَرْضَ

the land

l-arḍa

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

أَهْلِهَآ

its people

ahlihā

أَن

that

an

لَّوْ

if

law

نَشَآءُ

We willed

nashāu

أَصَبْنَـٰهُم

We (could) afflict them

aṣabnāhum

بِذُنُوبِهِمْ ۚ

for their sins

bidhunūbihim

وَنَطْبَعُ

and We put a seal

wanaṭbaʿu

عَلَىٰ

over

ʿalā

قُلُوبِهِمْ

their hearts

qulūbihim

فَهُمْ

so they

fahum

لَا

(do) not

يَسْمَعُونَ

hear

yasmaʿūna

١٠٠

Has it not become clear to those who inherited the earth after its [previous] people that if We willed, We could afflict them for their sins? But We seal over their hearts so they do not hear.1

— Saheeh International

تِلْكَ

These

til'ka

ٱلْقُرَىٰ

(were) the cities

l-qurā

نَقُصُّ

We relate

naquṣṣu

عَلَيْكَ

to you

ʿalayka

مِنْ

of

min

أَنۢبَآئِهَا ۚ

their news

anbāihā

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

جَآءَتْهُمْ

came to them

jāathum

رُسُلُهُم

their Messengers

rusuluhum

بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ

with clear proofs

bil-bayināti

فَمَا

but not

famā

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

لِيُؤْمِنُوا۟

to believe

liyu'minū

بِمَا

in what

bimā

كَذَّبُوا۟

they (had) denied

kadhabū

مِن

from

min

قَبْلُ ۚ

before

qablu

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

يَطْبَعُ

(has been) put a seal

yaṭbaʿu

ٱللَّهُ

(by) Allah

l-lahu

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

قُلُوبِ

(the) hearts

qulūbi

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

(of) the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

١٠١

Those cities - We relate to you, [O Muḥammad], some of their news. And certainly did their messengers come to them with clear proofs, but they were not to believe in that which they had denied before.1 Thus does Allāh seal over the hearts of the disbelievers.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

وَجَدْنَا

We found

wajadnā

لِأَكْثَرِهِم

for most of them

li-aktharihim

مِّنْ

any

min

عَهْدٍۢ ۖ

covenant

ʿahdin

وَإِن

But

wa-in

وَجَدْنَآ

We found

wajadnā

أَكْثَرَهُمْ

most of them

aktharahum

لَفَـٰسِقِينَ

certainly, defiantly disobedient

lafāsiqīna

١٠٢

And We did not find for most of them any covenant;1 but indeed, We found most of them defiantly disobedient.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

بَعَثْنَا

We sent

baʿathnā

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِهِم

after them

baʿdihim

مُّوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ

with Our Signs

biāyātinā

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

فِرْعَوْنَ

Firaun

fir'ʿawna

وَمَلَإِي۟هِۦ

and his chiefs

wamala-ihi

فَظَلَمُوا۟

But they were unjust

faẓalamū

بِهَا ۖ

to them

bihā

فَٱنظُرْ

So see

fa-unẓur

كَيْفَ

how

kayfa

كَانَ

was

kāna

عَـٰقِبَةُ

(the) end

ʿāqibatu

ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ

(of) the corrupters

l-muf'sidīna

١٠٣

Then We sent after them Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, but they were unjust toward them.1 So see how was the end of the corrupters.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَ

And said

waqāla

مُوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

يَـٰفِرْعَوْنُ

O Firaun

yāfir'ʿawnu

إِنِّى

Indeed, I am

innī

رَسُولٌۭ

a Messenger

rasūlun

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّ

(the) Lord

rabbi

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

١٠٤

And Moses said, "O Pharaoh, I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds

— Saheeh International

حَقِيقٌ

Obligated

ḥaqīqun

عَلَىٰٓ

on

ʿalā

أَن

that

an

لَّآ

not

أَقُولَ

I say

aqūla

عَلَى

about

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلْحَقَّ ۚ

the truth

l-ḥaqa

قَدْ

Verily

qad

جِئْتُكُم

I (have) come to you

ji'tukum

بِبَيِّنَةٍۢ

with a clear Sign

bibayyinatin

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbikum

فَأَرْسِلْ

so send

fa-arsil

مَعِىَ

with me

maʿiya

بَنِىٓ

(the) Children

banī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

(of) Israel

is'rāīla

١٠٥

[Who is] obligated not to say about Allāh except the truth. I have come to you with clear evidence from your Lord, so send with me the Children of Israel."1

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِن

If

in

كُنتَ

you have

kunta

جِئْتَ

come

ji'ta

بِـَٔايَةٍۢ

with a Sign

biāyatin

فَأْتِ

then bring

fati

بِهَآ

it

bihā

إِن

if

in

كُنتَ

you are

kunta

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

the truthful

l-ṣādiqīna

١٠٦

[Pharaoh] said, "If you have come with a sign, then bring it forth, if you should be of the truthful."

— Saheeh International

فَأَلْقَىٰ

So he threw

fa-alqā

عَصَاهُ

his staff

ʿaṣāhu

فَإِذَا

and suddenly

fa-idhā

هِىَ

it

hiya

ثُعْبَانٌۭ

(was) a serpent

thuʿ'bānun

مُّبِينٌۭ

manifest

mubīnun

١٠٧

So he [i.e., Moses] threw his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent, manifest.1

— Saheeh International

وَنَزَعَ

And he drew out

wanazaʿa

يَدَهُۥ

his hand

yadahu

فَإِذَا

and suddenly

fa-idhā

هِىَ

it

hiya

بَيْضَآءُ

(was) white

bayḍāu

لِلنَّـٰظِرِينَ

for the observers

lilnnāẓirīna

١٠٨

And he drew out his hand; thereupon it was white [with radiance] for the observers.

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

Said

qāla

ٱلْمَلَأُ

the chiefs

l-mala-u

مِن

of

min

قَوْمِ

(the) people

qawmi

فِرْعَوْنَ

(of) Firaun

fir'ʿawna

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

لَسَـٰحِرٌ

(is) surely a magician

lasāḥirun

عَلِيمٌۭ

learned

ʿalīmun

١٠٩

Said the eminent among the people of Pharaoh, "Indeed, this is a learned magician

— Saheeh International

يُرِيدُ

He wants

yurīdu

أَن

to

an

يُخْرِجَكُم

drive you out

yukh'rijakum

مِّنْ

from

min

أَرْضِكُمْ ۖ

your land

arḍikum

فَمَاذَا

so what

famādhā

تَأْمُرُونَ

(do) you instruct

tamurūna

١١٠

Who wants to expel you from your land [through magic], so what do you instruct?"

— Saheeh International

قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

أَرْجِهْ

Postpone him

arjih

وَأَخَاهُ

and his brother

wa-akhāhu

وَأَرْسِلْ

and send

wa-arsil

فِى

in

ٱلْمَدَآئِنِ

the cities

l-madāini

حَـٰشِرِينَ

gatherers

ḥāshirīna

١١١

They said,1 "Postpone [the matter of] him and his brother and send among the cities gatherers

— Saheeh International

يَأْتُوكَ

They (will) bring to you

yatūka

بِكُلِّ

[with] every

bikulli

سَـٰحِرٍ

magician

sāḥirin

عَلِيمٍۢ

learned

ʿalīmin

١١٢

Who will bring you every learned magician."

— Saheeh International

وَجَآءَ

So came

wajāa

ٱلسَّحَرَةُ

the magicians

l-saḥaratu

فِرْعَوْنَ

(to) Firaun

fir'ʿawna

قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

لَنَا

for us

lanā

لَأَجْرًا

surely (will be) a reward

la-ajran

إِن

if

in

كُنَّا

we are

kunnā

نَحْنُ

[we]

naḥnu

ٱلْغَـٰلِبِينَ

the victors

l-ghālibīna

١١٣

And the magicians came to Pharaoh. They said, "Indeed for us is a reward if we are the predominant."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

نَعَمْ

Yes

naʿam

وَإِنَّكُمْ

and indeed you

wa-innakum

لَمِنَ

surely (will be) of

lamina

ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ

the ones who are near

l-muqarabīna

١١٤

He said, "Yes, and, [moreover], you will be among those made near [to me]."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ

O Musa

yāmūsā

إِمَّآ

Whether

immā

أَن

[that]

an

تُلْقِىَ

you throw

tul'qiya

وَإِمَّآ

or Whether

wa-immā

أَن

[that]

an

نَّكُونَ

we will be

nakūna

نَحْنُ

[we]

naḥnu

ٱلْمُلْقِينَ

the ones to throw

l-mul'qīna

١١٥

They said, "O Moses, either you throw [your staff], or we will be the ones to throw [first]."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

أَلْقُوا۟ ۖ

Throw

alqū

فَلَمَّآ

Then when

falammā

أَلْقَوْا۟

they threw

alqaw

سَحَرُوٓا۟

they bewitched

saḥarū

أَعْيُنَ

(the) eyes

aʿyuna

ٱلنَّاسِ

(of) the people

l-nāsi

وَٱسْتَرْهَبُوهُمْ

and terrified them

wa-is'tarhabūhum

وَجَآءُو

and came (up)

wajāū

بِسِحْرٍ

with a magic

bisiḥ'rin

عَظِيمٍۢ

great

ʿaẓīmin

١١٦

He said, "Throw," and when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people and struck terror into them, and they presented a great [feat of] magic.1

— Saheeh International

۞ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ

And We inspired

wa-awḥaynā

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

مُوسَىٰٓ

Musa

mūsā

أَنْ

that

an

أَلْقِ

Throw

alqi

عَصَاكَ ۖ

your staff

ʿaṣāka

فَإِذَا

and suddenly

fa-idhā

هِىَ

it

hiya

تَلْقَفُ

swallow(ed)

talqafu

مَا

what

يَأْفِكُونَ

they (were) falsifying

yafikūna

١١٧

And We inspired to Moses, "Throw your staff," and at once it devoured what they were falsifying.

— Saheeh International

فَوَقَعَ

So was established

fawaqaʿa

ٱلْحَقُّ

the truth

l-ḥaqu

وَبَطَلَ

and became futile

wabaṭala

مَا

what

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

يَعْمَلُونَ

do

yaʿmalūna

١١٨

So the truth was established, and abolished was what they were doing.

— Saheeh International

فَغُلِبُوا۟

So they were defeated

faghulibū

هُنَالِكَ

there

hunālika

وَٱنقَلَبُوا۟

and returned

wa-inqalabū

صَـٰغِرِينَ

humiliated

ṣāghirīna

١١٩

And they [i.e., Pharaoh and his people] were overcome right there and became debased.

— Saheeh International

وَأُلْقِىَ

And fell down

wa-ul'qiya

ٱلسَّحَرَةُ

the magicians

l-saḥaratu

سَـٰجِدِينَ

prostrate

sājidīna

١٢٠

And the magicians fell down in prostration [to Allāh].

— Saheeh International

قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

ءَامَنَّا

We believe

āmannā

بِرَبِّ

in (the) Lord

birabbi

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

١٢١

They said, "We have believed in the Lord of the worlds,

— Saheeh International

رَبِّ

Lord

rabbi

مُوسَىٰ

(of) Musa

mūsā

وَهَـٰرُونَ

and Harun

wahārūna

١٢٢

The Lord of Moses and Aaron."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

Said

qāla

فِرْعَوْنُ

Firaun

fir'ʿawnu

ءَامَنتُم

You believed

āmantum

بِهِۦ

in him

bihi

قَبْلَ

before

qabla

أَنْ

[that]

an

ءَاذَنَ

I give permission

ādhana

لَكُمْ ۖ

to you

lakum

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

لَمَكْرٌۭ

(is) surely a plot

lamakrun

مَّكَرْتُمُوهُ

you have plotted it

makartumūhu

فِى

in

ٱلْمَدِينَةِ

the city

l-madīnati

لِتُخْرِجُوا۟

so that you may drive out

litukh'rijū

مِنْهَآ

from it

min'hā

أَهْلَهَا ۖ

its people

ahlahā

فَسَوْفَ

But soon

fasawfa

تَعْلَمُونَ

you will know

taʿlamūna

١٢٣

Said Pharaoh, "You believed in him1 before I gave you permission. Indeed, this is a conspiracy which you conspired in the city to expel therefrom its people. But you are going to know.

— Saheeh International

لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ

I will surely cut off

la-uqaṭṭiʿanna

أَيْدِيَكُمْ

your hands

aydiyakum

وَأَرْجُلَكُم

and your feet

wa-arjulakum

مِّنْ

of

min

خِلَـٰفٍۢ

opposite (sides)

khilāfin

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

لَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمْ

I will surely crucify you

la-uṣallibannakum

أَجْمَعِينَ

all

ajmaʿīna

١٢٤

I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides; then I will surely crucify you all."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

إِنَّآ

Indeed, we

innā

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

رَبِّنَا

our Lord

rabbinā

مُنقَلِبُونَ

(will) return

munqalibūna

١٢٥

They said, "Indeed, to our Lord we will return.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

تَنقِمُ

you take revenge

tanqimu

مِنَّآ

from us

minnā

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَنْ

that

an

ءَامَنَّا

we believed

āmannā

بِـَٔايَـٰتِ

in (the) Signs

biāyāti

رَبِّنَا

(of) our Lord

rabbinā

لَمَّا

when

lammā

جَآءَتْنَا ۚ

they came to us

jāatnā

رَبَّنَآ

Our Lord

rabbanā

أَفْرِغْ

Pour

afrigh

عَلَيْنَا

upon us

ʿalaynā

صَبْرًۭا

patience

ṣabran

وَتَوَفَّنَا

and cause us to die

watawaffanā

مُسْلِمِينَ

(as) Muslims

mus'limīna

١٢٦

And you do not resent us except because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us. Our Lord, pour upon us patience1 and let us die as Muslims [in submission to You]."

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَ

And said

waqāla

ٱلْمَلَأُ

the chiefs

l-mala-u

مِن

of

min

قَوْمِ

(the) people

qawmi

فِرْعَوْنَ

(of) Firaun

fir'ʿawna

أَتَذَرُ

Will you leave

atadharu

مُوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

وَقَوْمَهُۥ

and his people

waqawmahu

لِيُفْسِدُوا۟

so that they cause corruption

liyuf'sidū

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

وَيَذَرَكَ

and forsake you

wayadharaka

وَءَالِهَتَكَ ۚ

and your gods

waālihataka

قَالَ

He said

qāla

سَنُقَتِّلُ

We will kill

sanuqattilu

أَبْنَآءَهُمْ

their sons

abnāahum

وَنَسْتَحْىِۦ

and we will let live

wanastaḥyī

نِسَآءَهُمْ

their women

nisāahum

وَإِنَّا

and indeed, we

wa-innā

فَوْقَهُمْ

over them

fawqahum

قَـٰهِرُونَ

(are) subjugators

qāhirūna

١٢٧

And the eminent among the people of Pharaoh said, "Will you leave Moses and his people to cause corruption in the land and abandon you and your gods?" [Pharaoh] said, "We will kill their sons and keep their women alive; and indeed, we are subjugators over them."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

Said

qāla

مُوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

لِقَوْمِهِ

to his people

liqawmihi

ٱسْتَعِينُوا۟

Seek help

is'taʿīnū

بِٱللَّهِ

from Allah

bil-lahi

وَٱصْبِرُوٓا۟ ۖ

and be patient

wa-iṣ'birū

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلْأَرْضَ

the earth

l-arḍa

لِلَّهِ

(belongs) to Allah

lillahi

يُورِثُهَا

He causes to inherit it

yūrithuhā

مَن

whom

man

يَشَآءُ

He wills

yashāu

مِنْ

of

min

عِبَادِهِۦ ۖ

His servants

ʿibādihi

وَٱلْعَـٰقِبَةُ

And the end

wal-ʿāqibatu

لِلْمُتَّقِينَ

(is) for the righteous

lil'muttaqīna

١٢٨

Said Moses to his people, "Seek help through Allāh and be patient. Indeed, the earth belongs to Allāh. He causes to inherit it whom He wills of His servants. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

أُوذِينَا

We have been harmed

ūdhīnā

مِن

from

min

قَبْلِ

before

qabli

أَن

[that]

an

تَأْتِيَنَا

you came to us

tatiyanā

وَمِنۢ

from

wamin

بَعْدِ

and after

baʿdi

مَا

[what]

جِئْتَنَا ۚ

you have come to us

ji'tanā

قَالَ

He said

qāla

عَسَىٰ

Perhaps

ʿasā

رَبُّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbukum

أَن

[that]

an

يُهْلِكَ

will destroy

yuh'lika

عَدُوَّكُمْ

your enemy

ʿaduwwakum

وَيَسْتَخْلِفَكُمْ

and make you successors

wayastakhlifakum

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

فَيَنظُرَ

then see

fayanẓura

كَيْفَ

how

kayfa

تَعْمَلُونَ

you will do

taʿmalūna

١٢٩

They said, "We have been harmed before you came to us and after you have come to us." He said, "Perhaps your Lord will destroy your enemy and grant you succession in the land and see how you will do."

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

أَخَذْنَآ

We seized

akhadhnā

ءَالَ

(the) people

āla

فِرْعَوْنَ

(of) Firaun

fir'ʿawna

بِٱلسِّنِينَ

with years (of famine)

bil-sinīna

وَنَقْصٍۢ

and a deficit

wanaqṣin

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ

[the] fruits

l-thamarāti

لَعَلَّهُمْ

so that they may

laʿallahum

يَذَّكَّرُونَ

receive admonition

yadhakkarūna

١٣٠

And We certainly seized1 the people of Pharaoh with years of famine and a deficiency in fruits that perhaps they would be reminded.

— Saheeh International

فَإِذَا

But when

fa-idhā

جَآءَتْهُمُ

came to them

jāathumu

ٱلْحَسَنَةُ

the good

l-ḥasanatu

قَالُوا۟

they said

qālū

لَنَا

For us

lanā

هَـٰذِهِۦ ۖ

(is) this

hādhihi

وَإِن

And if

wa-in

تُصِبْهُمْ

afflicts them

tuṣib'hum

سَيِّئَةٌۭ

bad

sayyi-atun

يَطَّيَّرُوا۟

they ascribe evil omens

yaṭṭayyarū

بِمُوسَىٰ

to Musa

bimūsā

وَمَن

and who

waman

مَّعَهُۥٓ ۗ

(were) with him

maʿahu

أَلَآ

Behold

alā

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

طَـٰٓئِرُهُمْ

their evil omens

ṭāiruhum

عِندَ

(are) with

ʿinda

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَلَـٰكِنَّ

but

walākinna

أَكْثَرَهُمْ

most of them

aktharahum

لَا

(do) not

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

١٣١

But when good [i.e., provision] came to them, they said, "This is ours [by right]." And if a bad [condition] struck them, they saw an evil omen in Moses and those with him. Unquestionably, their fortune is with Allāh, but most of them do not know.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالُوا۟

And they said

waqālū

مَهْمَا

Whatever

mahmā

تَأْتِنَا

you bring us

tatinā

بِهِۦ

therewith

bihi

مِنْ

of

min

ءَايَةٍۢ

(the) sign

āyatin

لِّتَسْحَرَنَا

so that you bewitch us

litasḥaranā

بِهَا

with it

bihā

فَمَا

then not

famā

نَحْنُ

we

naḥnu

لَكَ

(will be) in you

laka

بِمُؤْمِنِينَ

believers

bimu'minīna

١٣٢

And they said, "No matter what sign you bring us with which to bewitch us, we will not be believers in you."

— Saheeh International

فَأَرْسَلْنَا

So We sent

fa-arsalnā

عَلَيْهِمُ

on them

ʿalayhimu

ٱلطُّوفَانَ

the flood

l-ṭūfāna

وَٱلْجَرَادَ

and the locusts

wal-jarāda

وَٱلْقُمَّلَ

and the lice

wal-qumala

وَٱلضَّفَادِعَ

and the frogs

wal-ḍafādiʿa

وَٱلدَّمَ

and the blood

wal-dama

ءَايَـٰتٍۢ

(as) signs

āyātin

مُّفَصَّلَـٰتٍۢ

manifest

mufaṣṣalātin

فَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟

but they showed arrogance

fa-is'takbarū

وَكَانُوا۟

and they were

wakānū

قَوْمًۭا

a people

qawman

مُّجْرِمِينَ

criminal

muj'rimīna

١٣٣

So We sent upon them the flood and locusts and lice and frogs and blood as distinct signs, but they were arrogant and were a criminal people.

— Saheeh International

وَلَمَّا

And when

walammā

وَقَعَ

fell

waqaʿa

عَلَيْهِمُ

on them

ʿalayhimu

ٱلرِّجْزُ

the punishment

l-rij'zu

قَالُوا۟

they said

qālū

يَـٰمُوسَى

O Musa

yāmūsā

ٱدْعُ

Invoke

ud'ʿu

لَنَا

for us

lanā

رَبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

بِمَا

by what

bimā

عَهِدَ

He has promised

ʿahida

عِندَكَ ۖ

to you

ʿindaka

لَئِن

If

la-in

كَشَفْتَ

you remove

kashafta

عَنَّا

from us

ʿannā

ٱلرِّجْزَ

the punishment

l-rij'za

لَنُؤْمِنَنَّ

surely, we will believe

lanu'minanna

لَكَ

[for] you

laka

وَلَنُرْسِلَنَّ

and surely, we will send

walanur'silanna

مَعَكَ

with you

maʿaka

بَنِىٓ

(the) Children

banī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

(of) Israel

is'rāīla

١٣٤

And when the punishment descended upon them, they said, "O Moses, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. If you [can] remove the punishment from us, we will surely believe you, and we will send with you the Children of Israel."

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

But when

falammā

كَشَفْنَا

We removed

kashafnā

عَنْهُمُ

from them

ʿanhumu

ٱلرِّجْزَ

the punishment

l-rij'za

إِلَىٰٓ

till

ilā

أَجَلٍ

a (fixed) term

ajalin

هُم

(which) they

hum

بَـٰلِغُوهُ

were to reach [it]

bālighūhu

إِذَا

then

idhā

هُمْ

they

hum

يَنكُثُونَ

broke (the word)

yankuthūna

١٣٥

But when We removed the punishment from them until a term which they were to reach,1 then at once they broke their word.

— Saheeh International

فَٱنتَقَمْنَا

So We took retribution

fa-intaqamnā

مِنْهُمْ

from them

min'hum

فَأَغْرَقْنَـٰهُمْ

and We drowned them

fa-aghraqnāhum

فِى

in

ٱلْيَمِّ

the sea

l-yami

بِأَنَّهُمْ

because they

bi-annahum

كَذَّبُوا۟

denied

kadhabū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا

Our Signs

biāyātinā

وَكَانُوا۟

and they were

wakānū

عَنْهَا

to them

ʿanhā

غَـٰفِلِينَ

heedless

ghāfilīna

١٣٦

So We took retribution from them, and We drowned them in the sea because they denied Our signs and were heedless of them.

— Saheeh International

وَأَوْرَثْنَا

And We made inheritors

wa-awrathnā

ٱلْقَوْمَ

the people

l-qawma

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَانُوا۟

were

kānū

يُسْتَضْعَفُونَ

considered weak

yus'taḍʿafūna

مَشَـٰرِقَ

(the) eastern (parts)

mashāriqa

ٱلْأَرْضِ

(of) the land

l-arḍi

وَمَغَـٰرِبَهَا

and the western (parts) of it

wamaghāribahā

ٱلَّتِى

which

allatī

بَـٰرَكْنَا

We blessed

bāraknā

فِيهَا ۖ

[in it]

fīhā

وَتَمَّتْ

And was fulfilled

watammat

كَلِمَتُ

(the) word

kalimatu

رَبِّكَ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ

the best

l-ḥus'nā

عَلَىٰ

for

ʿalā

بَنِىٓ

(the) Children

banī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

(of) Israel

is'rāīla

بِمَا

because

bimā

صَبَرُوا۟ ۖ

they were patient

ṣabarū

وَدَمَّرْنَا

And We destroyed

wadammarnā

مَا

what

كَانَ

used to

kāna

يَصْنَعُ

make

yaṣnaʿu

فِرْعَوْنُ

Firaun

fir'ʿawnu

وَقَوْمُهُۥ

and his people

waqawmuhu

وَمَا

and what

wamā

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

يَعْرِشُونَ

erect

yaʿrishūna

١٣٧

And We caused the people who had been oppressed to inherit the eastern regions of the land and the western ones, which We had blessed. And the good word [i.e., decree] of your Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel because of what they had patiently endured. And We destroyed [all] that Pharaoh and his people were producing and what they had been building.

— Saheeh International

وَجَـٰوَزْنَا

And We led across

wajāwaznā

بِبَنِىٓ

(the) Children

bibanī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

(of) Israel

is'rāīla

ٱلْبَحْرَ

the sea

l-baḥra

فَأَتَوْا۟

Then they came

fa-ataw

عَلَىٰ

upon

ʿalā

قَوْمٍۢ

a people

qawmin

يَعْكُفُونَ

devoted

yaʿkufūna

عَلَىٰٓ

to

ʿalā

أَصْنَامٍۢ

idols

aṣnāmin

لَّهُمْ ۚ

of theirs

lahum

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

يَـٰمُوسَى

O Musa

yāmūsā

ٱجْعَل

Make

ij'ʿal

لَّنَآ

for us

lanā

إِلَـٰهًۭا

a god

ilāhan

كَمَا

like what

kamā

لَهُمْ

they have

lahum

ءَالِهَةٌۭ ۚ

gods

ālihatun

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِنَّكُمْ

Indeed, you

innakum

قَوْمٌۭ

(are) a people

qawmun

تَجْهَلُونَ

ignorant

tajhalūna

١٣٨

And We took the Children of Israel across the sea; then they came upon a people intent in devotion to [some] idols of theirs. They [the Children of Israel] said, "O Moses, make for us a god just as they have gods." He said, "Indeed, you are a people behaving ignorantly.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

these

hāulāi

مُتَبَّرٌۭ

destroyed

mutabbarun

مَّا

(is) what

هُمْ

they

hum

فِيهِ

(are) in it

fīhi

وَبَـٰطِلٌۭ

and vain

wabāṭilun

مَّا

(is) what

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

يَعْمَلُونَ

do

yaʿmalūna

١٣٩

Indeed, those [worshippers] - destroyed is that in which they are [engaged], and worthless is whatever they were doing."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

أَغَيْرَ

Should other than

aghayra

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

أَبْغِيكُمْ

I seek for you

abghīkum

إِلَـٰهًۭا

a god

ilāhan

وَهُوَ

while He

wahuwa

فَضَّلَكُمْ

has preferred you

faḍḍalakum

عَلَى

over

ʿalā

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

١٤٠

He said, "Is it other than Allāh I should desire for you as a god1 while He has preferred you over the worlds?"

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

أَنجَيْنَـٰكُم

We saved you

anjaynākum

مِّنْ

from

min

ءَالِ

(the) people

āli

فِرْعَوْنَ

(of) Firaun

fir'ʿawna

يَسُومُونَكُمْ

who were afflicting you

yasūmūnakum

سُوٓءَ

(with) worst

sūa

ٱلْعَذَابِ ۖ

(of) torment

l-ʿadhābi

يُقَتِّلُونَ

they were killing

yuqattilūna

أَبْنَآءَكُمْ

your sons

abnāakum

وَيَسْتَحْيُونَ

and letting live

wayastaḥyūna

نِسَآءَكُمْ ۚ

your women

nisāakum

وَفِى

And in

wafī

ذَٰلِكُم

that

dhālikum

بَلَآءٌۭ

(was) a trial

balāon

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbikum

عَظِيمٌۭ

great

ʿaẓīmun

١٤١

And [recall, O Children of Israel], when We saved you from the people of Pharaoh, [who were] afflicting you with the worst torment - killing your sons and keeping your women alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَوَٰعَدْنَا

And We appointed

wawāʿadnā

مُوسَىٰ

(for) Musa

mūsā

ثَلَـٰثِينَ

thirty

thalāthīna

لَيْلَةًۭ

nights

laylatan

وَأَتْمَمْنَـٰهَا

and We completed them

wa-atmamnāhā

بِعَشْرٍۢ

with ten (more)

biʿashrin

فَتَمَّ

so was completed

fatamma

مِيقَـٰتُ

(the) set term

mīqātu

رَبِّهِۦٓ

(of) his Lord

rabbihi

أَرْبَعِينَ

(of) forty

arbaʿīna

لَيْلَةًۭ ۚ

night(s)

laylatan

وَقَالَ

And said

waqāla

مُوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

لِأَخِيهِ

to his brother

li-akhīhi

هَـٰرُونَ

Harun

hārūna

ٱخْلُفْنِى

Take my place

ukh'luf'nī

فِى

in

قَوْمِى

my people

qawmī

وَأَصْلِحْ

and do right

wa-aṣliḥ

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَتَّبِعْ

follow

tattabiʿ

سَبِيلَ

(the) way

sabīla

ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ

(of) the corrupters

l-muf'sidīna

١٤٢

And We made an appointment with Moses for thirty nights and perfected them by [the addition of] ten; so the term of his Lord was completed as forty nights. And Moses said to his brother Aaron, "Take my place among my people, do right [by them],1 and do not follow the way of the corrupters."

— Saheeh International

وَلَمَّا

And when

walammā

جَآءَ

came

jāa

مُوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

لِمِيقَـٰتِنَا

to Our appointed place

limīqātinā

وَكَلَّمَهُۥ

and spoke to him

wakallamahu

رَبُّهُۥ

his Lord

rabbuhu

قَالَ

he said

qāla

رَبِّ

O my Lord

rabbi

أَرِنِىٓ

Show me

arinī

أَنظُرْ

(that) I may look

anẓur

إِلَيْكَ ۚ

at You

ilayka

قَالَ

He said

qāla

لَن

Never

lan

تَرَىٰنِى

you (can) see Me

tarānī

وَلَـٰكِنِ

but

walākini

ٱنظُرْ

look

unẓur

إِلَى

at

ilā

ٱلْجَبَلِ

the mountain

l-jabali

فَإِنِ

[then] if

fa-ini

ٱسْتَقَرَّ

it remains

is'taqarra

مَكَانَهُۥ

in its place

makānahu

فَسَوْفَ

then

fasawfa

تَرَىٰنِى ۚ

you (will) see Me

tarānī

فَلَمَّا

But when

falammā

تَجَلَّىٰ

revealed (His) Glory

tajallā

رَبُّهُۥ

his Lord

rabbuhu

لِلْجَبَلِ

to the mountain

lil'jabali

جَعَلَهُۥ

He made it

jaʿalahu

دَكًّۭا

crumbled to dust

dakkan

وَخَرَّ

and fell down

wakharra

مُوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

صَعِقًۭا ۚ

unconscious

ṣaʿiqan

فَلَمَّآ

And when

falammā

أَفَاقَ

he recovered

afāqa

قَالَ

he said

qāla

سُبْحَـٰنَكَ

Glory be to You

sub'ḥānaka

تُبْتُ

I turn (in repentance)

tub'tu

إِلَيْكَ

to you

ilayka

وَأَنَا۠

and I am

wa-anā

أَوَّلُ

(the) first

awwalu

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

(of) the believers

l-mu'minīna

١٤٣

And when Moses arrived at Our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he said, "My Lord, show me [Yourself] that I may look at You." [Allāh] said, "You will not see Me,1 but look at the mountain; if it should remain in place, then you will see Me." But when his Lord appeared to the mountain, He rendered it level,2 and Moses fell unconscious. And when he awoke, he said, "Exalted are You! I have repented to You, and I am the first [among my people] of the believers."3

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ

O Musa

yāmūsā

إِنِّى

Indeed, I

innī

ٱصْطَفَيْتُكَ

have chosen you

iṣ'ṭafaytuka

عَلَى

over

ʿalā

ٱلنَّاسِ

the people

l-nāsi

بِرِسَـٰلَـٰتِى

with My Messages

birisālātī

وَبِكَلَـٰمِى

and with My words

wabikalāmī

فَخُذْ

So take

fakhudh

مَآ

what

ءَاتَيْتُكَ

I have given you

ātaytuka

وَكُن

and be

wakun

مِّنَ

among

mina

ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ

the grateful

l-shākirīna

١٤٤

[Allāh] said, "O Moses, I have chosen you over the people with My messages and My words [to you]. So take what I have given you and be among the grateful."

— Saheeh International

وَكَتَبْنَا

And We ordained (laws)

wakatabnā

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

فِى

in

ٱلْأَلْوَاحِ

the tablets

l-alwāḥi

مِن

of

min

كُلِّ

every

kulli

شَىْءٍۢ

thing

shayin

مَّوْعِظَةًۭ

an instruction

mawʿiẓatan

وَتَفْصِيلًۭا

and explanation

watafṣīlan

لِّكُلِّ

for every

likulli

شَىْءٍۢ

thing

shayin

فَخُذْهَا

So take them

fakhudh'hā

بِقُوَّةٍۢ

with firmness

biquwwatin

وَأْمُرْ

and order

wamur

قَوْمَكَ

your people

qawmaka

يَأْخُذُوا۟

(to) take

yakhudhū

بِأَحْسَنِهَا ۚ

(the) best of it

bi-aḥsanihā

سَأُو۟رِيكُمْ

I will show you

sa-urīkum

دَارَ

(the) home

dāra

ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ

(of) the defiantly disobedient

l-fāsiqīna

١٤٥

And We wrote for him on the tablets [something] of all things - instruction and explanation for all things, [saying], "Take them with determination and order your people to take the best of it. I will show you the home of the defiantly disobedient."1

— Saheeh International

سَأَصْرِفُ

I will turn away

sa-aṣrifu

عَنْ

from

ʿan

ءَايَـٰتِىَ

My Signs

āyātiya

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

يَتَكَبَّرُونَ

are arrogant

yatakabbarūna

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

بِغَيْرِ

without

bighayri

ٱلْحَقِّ

[the] right

l-ḥaqi

وَإِن

and if

wa-in

يَرَوْا۟

they see

yaraw

كُلَّ

every

kulla

ءَايَةٍۢ

sign

āyatin

لَّا

not

يُؤْمِنُوا۟

(will) they believe

yu'minū

بِهَا

in it

bihā

وَإِن

And if

wa-in

يَرَوْا۟

they see

yaraw

سَبِيلَ

(the) way

sabīla

ٱلرُّشْدِ

(of) the righteousness

l-rush'di

لَا

not

يَتَّخِذُوهُ

(will) they take it

yattakhidhūhu

سَبِيلًۭا

(as) a way

sabīlan

وَإِن

but if

wa-in

يَرَوْا۟

they see

yaraw

سَبِيلَ

(the) way

sabīla

ٱلْغَىِّ

(of) [the] error

l-ghayi

يَتَّخِذُوهُ

they will take it

yattakhidhūhu

سَبِيلًۭا ۚ

(as) a way

sabīlan

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

بِأَنَّهُمْ

(is) because they

bi-annahum

كَذَّبُوا۟

denied

kadhabū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا

Our Signs

biāyātinā

وَكَانُوا۟

and they were

wakānū

عَنْهَا

of them

ʿanhā

غَـٰفِلِينَ

heedless

ghāfilīna

١٤٦

I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant upon the earth without right; and if they should see every sign, they will not believe in it. And if they see the way of consciousness,1 they will not adopt it as a way; but if they see the way of error, they will adopt it as a way. That is because they have denied Our signs and they were heedless of them.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

كَذَّبُوا۟

denied

kadhabū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا

Our Signs

biāyātinā

وَلِقَآءِ

and (the) meeting

waliqāi

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

(of) the Hereafter

l-ākhirati

حَبِطَتْ

worthless

ḥabiṭat

أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ ۚ

(are) their deeds

aʿmāluhum

هَلْ

Will

hal

يُجْزَوْنَ

they be recompensed

yuj'zawna

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَا

(for) what

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

يَعْمَلُونَ

do

yaʿmalūna

١٤٧

Those who denied Our signs and the meeting of the Hereafter - their deeds have become worthless. Are they recompensed except for what they used to do?

— Saheeh International

وَٱتَّخَذَ

And took

wa-ittakhadha

قَوْمُ

(the) people

qawmu

مُوسَىٰ

(of) Musa

mūsā

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِهِۦ

after him

baʿdihi

مِنْ

from

min

حُلِيِّهِمْ

their ornaments

ḥuliyyihim

عِجْلًۭا

a calf

ʿij'lan

جَسَدًۭا

an image

jasadan

لَّهُۥ

[for] it

lahu

خُوَارٌ ۚ

(had) a lowing sound

khuwārun

أَلَمْ

Did not

alam

يَرَوْا۟

they see

yaraw

أَنَّهُۥ

that it

annahu

لَا

(could) not

يُكَلِّمُهُمْ

speak to them

yukallimuhum

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَهْدِيهِمْ

guide them

yahdīhim

سَبِيلًا ۘ

(to) a way

sabīlan

ٱتَّخَذُوهُ

They took it (for worship)

ittakhadhūhu

وَكَانُوا۟

and they were

wakānū

ظَـٰلِمِينَ

wrongdoers

ẓālimīna

١٤٨

And the people of Moses made, after [his departure], from their ornaments a calf - an image having a lowing sound. Did they not see that it could neither speak to them nor guide them to a way? They took it [for worship], and they were wrongdoers.

— Saheeh International

وَلَمَّا

And when

walammā

سُقِطَ

(it was made to) fall

suqiṭa

فِىٓ

into

أَيْدِيهِمْ

their hands

aydīhim

وَرَأَوْا۟

and they saw

wara-aw

أَنَّهُمْ

that they

annahum

قَدْ

(had) indeed

qad

ضَلُّوا۟

gone astray

ḍallū

قَالُوا۟

they said

qālū

لَئِن

If

la-in

لَّمْ

not

lam

يَرْحَمْنَا

has Mercy on us

yarḥamnā

رَبُّنَا

Our Lord

rabbunā

وَيَغْفِرْ

and forgive

wayaghfir

لَنَا

[for] us

lanā

لَنَكُونَنَّ

we will surely be

lanakūnanna

مِنَ

among

mina

ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ

the losers

l-khāsirīna

١٤٩

And when regret overcame them1 and they saw that they had gone astray, they said, "If our Lord does not have mercy upon us and forgive us, we will surely be among the losers."

— Saheeh International

وَلَمَّا

And when

walammā

رَجَعَ

returned

rajaʿa

مُوسَىٰٓ

Musa

mūsā

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

قَوْمِهِۦ

his people

qawmihi

غَضْبَـٰنَ

angry

ghaḍbāna

أَسِفًۭا

and grieved

asifan

قَالَ

he said

qāla

بِئْسَمَا

Evil is what

bi'samā

خَلَفْتُمُونِى

you have done in my place

khalaftumūnī

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِىٓ ۖ

after me

baʿdī

أَعَجِلْتُمْ

Were you impatient

aʿajil'tum

أَمْرَ

(over the) matter

amra

رَبِّكُمْ ۖ

(of) your Lord

rabbikum

وَأَلْقَى

And he cast down

wa-alqā

ٱلْأَلْوَاحَ

the tablets

l-alwāḥa

وَأَخَذَ

and seized

wa-akhadha

بِرَأْسِ

by head

birasi

أَخِيهِ

his brother

akhīhi

يَجُرُّهُۥٓ

dragging him

yajurruhu

إِلَيْهِ ۚ

to himself

ilayhi

قَالَ

He said

qāla

ٱبْنَ

O son

ib'na

أُمَّ

(of) my mother

umma

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلْقَوْمَ

the people

l-qawma

ٱسْتَضْعَفُونِى

considered me weak

is'taḍʿafūnī

وَكَادُوا۟

and were about to

wakādū

يَقْتُلُونَنِى

kill me

yaqtulūnanī

فَلَا

So (let) not

falā

تُشْمِتْ

rejoice

tush'mit

بِىَ

over me

biya

ٱلْأَعْدَآءَ

the enemies

l-aʿdāa

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَجْعَلْنِى

place me

tajʿalnī

مَعَ

with

maʿa

ٱلْقَوْمِ

the people

l-qawmi

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

(who are) wrongdoing

l-ẓālimīna

١٥٠

And when Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved, he said, "How wretched is that by which you have replaced me after [my departure]. Were you impatient over the matter of your Lord?" And he threw down the tablets and seized his brother by [the hair of] his head, pulling him toward him. [Aaron] said, "O son of my mother, indeed the people overpowered me and were about to kill me, so let not the enemies rejoice over me1 and do not place me among the wrongdoing people."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

رَبِّ

O my Lord

rabbi

ٱغْفِرْ

Forgive

igh'fir

لِى

me

وَلِأَخِى

and my brother

wali-akhī

وَأَدْخِلْنَا

and admit us

wa-adkhil'nā

فِى

into

رَحْمَتِكَ ۖ

Your Mercy

raḥmatika

وَأَنتَ

for You

wa-anta

أَرْحَمُ

(are) the Most Merciful

arḥamu

ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ

(of) the merciful

l-rāḥimīna

١٥١

[Moses] said, "My Lord, forgive me and my brother and admit us into Your mercy, for You are the most merciful of the merciful."

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ٱتَّخَذُوا۟

took

ittakhadhū

ٱلْعِجْلَ

the calf

l-ʿij'la

سَيَنَالُهُمْ

will reach them

sayanāluhum

غَضَبٌۭ

wrath

ghaḍabun

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّهِمْ

their Lord

rabbihim

وَذِلَّةٌۭ

and humiliation

wadhillatun

فِى

in

ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ

the life

l-ḥayati

ٱلدُّنْيَا ۚ

(of) the world

l-dun'yā

وَكَذَٰلِكَ

And thus

wakadhālika

نَجْزِى

We recompense

najzī

ٱلْمُفْتَرِينَ

the ones who invent (falsehood)

l-muf'tarīna

١٥٢

Indeed, those who took the calf [for worship] will obtain anger from their Lord and humiliation in the life of this world, and thus do We recompense the inventors [of falsehood].

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

عَمِلُوا۟

do

ʿamilū

ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ

the evil deeds

l-sayiāti

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

تَابُوا۟

repented

tābū

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِهَا

after that

baʿdihā

وَءَامَنُوٓا۟

and believed

waāmanū

إِنَّ

indeed

inna

رَبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِهَا

after that

baʿdihā

لَغَفُورٌۭ

(is) surely Oft-Forgiving

laghafūrun

رَّحِيمٌۭ

Most Merciful

raḥīmun

١٥٣

But those who committed misdeeds and then repented after them and believed - indeed your Lord, thereafter, is Forgiving and Merciful.

— Saheeh International

وَلَمَّا

And when

walammā

سَكَتَ

was calmed

sakata

عَن

from

ʿan

مُّوسَى

Musa

mūsā

ٱلْغَضَبُ

the anger

l-ghaḍabu

أَخَذَ

he took (up)

akhadha

ٱلْأَلْوَاحَ ۖ

the tablets

l-alwāḥa

وَفِى

and in

wafī

نُسْخَتِهَا

their inscription

nus'khatihā

هُدًۭى

(was) guidance

hudan

وَرَحْمَةٌۭ

and mercy

waraḥmatun

لِّلَّذِينَ

for those who

lilladhīna

هُمْ

[they]

hum

لِرَبِّهِمْ

of their Lord

lirabbihim

يَرْهَبُونَ

(are) fearful

yarhabūna

١٥٤

And when the anger subsided in Moses, he took up the tablets; and in their inscription was guidance and mercy for those who are fearful of their Lord.

— Saheeh International

وَٱخْتَارَ

And chose

wa-ikh'tāra

مُوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

قَوْمَهُۥ

(from) his people

qawmahu

سَبْعِينَ

seventy

sabʿīna

رَجُلًۭا

men

rajulan

لِّمِيقَـٰتِنَا ۖ

for Our appointment

limīqātinā

فَلَمَّآ

Then when

falammā

أَخَذَتْهُمُ

seized them

akhadhathumu

ٱلرَّجْفَةُ

the earthquake

l-rajfatu

قَالَ

he said

qāla

رَبِّ

O my Lord

rabbi

لَوْ

If

law

شِئْتَ

you (had) willed

shi'ta

أَهْلَكْتَهُم

You (could) have destroyed them

ahlaktahum

مِّن

from

min

قَبْلُ

before

qablu

وَإِيَّـٰىَ ۖ

and me

wa-iyyāya

أَتُهْلِكُنَا

Would You destroy us

atuh'likunā

بِمَا

for what

bimā

فَعَلَ

did

faʿala

ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ

the foolish

l-sufahāu

مِنَّآ ۖ

among us

minnā

إِنْ

Not

in

هِىَ

it (was)

hiya

إِلَّا

but

illā

فِتْنَتُكَ

Your trial

fit'natuka

تُضِلُّ

You let go astray

tuḍillu

بِهَا

by it

bihā

مَن

whom

man

تَشَآءُ

You will

tashāu

وَتَهْدِى

and You guide

watahdī

مَن

whom

man

تَشَآءُ ۖ

You will

tashāu

أَنتَ

You

anta

وَلِيُّنَا

(are) our Protector

waliyyunā

فَٱغْفِرْ

so forgive

fa-igh'fir

لَنَا

us

lanā

وَٱرْحَمْنَا ۖ

and have mercy upon us

wa-ir'ḥamnā

وَأَنتَ

and You

wa-anta

خَيْرُ

(are) Best

khayru

ٱلْغَـٰفِرِينَ

(of) Forgivers

l-ghāfirīna

١٥٥

And Moses chose from his people seventy men for Our appointment.1 And when the earthquake seized them,2 he said, "My Lord, if You had willed, You could have destroyed them before and me [as well]. Would You destroy us for what the foolish among us have done? This is not but Your trial by which You send astray whom You will and guide whom You will. You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy upon us; and You are the best of forgivers.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَٱكْتُبْ

And ordain

wa-uk'tub

لَنَا

for us

lanā

فِى

in

هَـٰذِهِ

this

hādhihi

ٱلدُّنْيَا

[the] world

l-dun'yā

حَسَنَةًۭ

good

ḥasanatan

وَفِى

and in

wafī

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

the Hereafter

l-ākhirati

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

هُدْنَآ

we have turned

hud'nā

إِلَيْكَ ۚ

to You

ilayka

قَالَ

He said

qāla

عَذَابِىٓ

My punishment

ʿadhābī

أُصِيبُ

I afflict

uṣību

بِهِۦ

with it

bihi

مَنْ

whom

man

أَشَآءُ ۖ

I will

ashāu

وَرَحْمَتِى

but My Mercy

waraḥmatī

وَسِعَتْ

encompasses

wasiʿat

كُلَّ

every

kulla

شَىْءٍۢ ۚ

thing

shayin

فَسَأَكْتُبُهَا

So I will ordain it

fasa-aktubuhā

لِلَّذِينَ

for those who

lilladhīna

يَتَّقُونَ

(are) righteous

yattaqūna

وَيُؤْتُونَ

and give

wayu'tūna

ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ

zakah

l-zakata

وَٱلَّذِينَ

and those who

wa-alladhīna

هُم

[they]

hum

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا

in Our Verses

biāyātinā

يُؤْمِنُونَ

they believe

yu'minūna

١٥٦

And decree for us in this world [that which is] good and [also] in the Hereafter; indeed, we have turned back to You." [Allāh] said, "My punishment - I afflict with it whom I will, but My mercy encompasses all things." So I will decree it [especially] for those who fear Me and give zakāh and those who believe in Our verses-

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

يَتَّبِعُونَ

follow

yattabiʿūna

ٱلرَّسُولَ

the Messenger

l-rasūla

ٱلنَّبِىَّ

the Prophet

l-nabiya

ٱلْأُمِّىَّ

the unlettered

l-umiya

ٱلَّذِى

whom

alladhī

يَجِدُونَهُۥ

they find him

yajidūnahu

مَكْتُوبًا

written

maktūban

عِندَهُمْ

with them

ʿindahum

فِى

in

ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ

the Taurat

l-tawrāti

وَٱلْإِنجِيلِ

and the Injeel

wal-injīli

يَأْمُرُهُم

He commands them

yamuruhum

بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ

to the right

bil-maʿrūfi

وَيَنْهَىٰهُمْ

and forbids them

wayanhāhum

عَنِ

from

ʿani

ٱلْمُنكَرِ

the wrong

l-munkari

وَيُحِلُّ

and he makes lawful

wayuḥillu

لَهُمُ

for them

lahumu

ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ

the pure things

l-ṭayibāti

وَيُحَرِّمُ

and makes unlawful

wayuḥarrimu

عَلَيْهِمُ

for them

ʿalayhimu

ٱلْخَبَـٰٓئِثَ

the impure things

l-khabāitha

وَيَضَعُ

and he relieves

wayaḍaʿu

عَنْهُمْ

from them

ʿanhum

إِصْرَهُمْ

their burden

iṣ'rahum

وَٱلْأَغْلَـٰلَ

and the fetters

wal-aghlāla

ٱلَّتِى

which

allatī

كَانَتْ

were

kānat

عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ

upon them

ʿalayhim

فَٱلَّذِينَ

So those who

fa-alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

بِهِۦ

in him

bihi

وَعَزَّرُوهُ

and honor him

waʿazzarūhu

وَنَصَرُوهُ

and help him

wanaṣarūhu

وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟

and follow

wa-ittabaʿū

ٱلنُّورَ

the light

l-nūra

ٱلَّذِىٓ

which

alladhī

أُنزِلَ

has been sent down

unzila

مَعَهُۥٓ ۙ

with him

maʿahu

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those (are)

ulāika

هُمُ

[they]

humu

ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ

the successful ones

l-muf'liḥūna

١٥٧

Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written [i.e., described] in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and prohibits them from what is wrong and makes lawful for them what is good and forbids them from what is evil and relieves them of their burden1 and the shackles which were upon them.2 So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him - it is those who will be the successful.

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O

yāayyuhā

ٱلنَّاسُ

mankind

l-nāsu

إِنِّى

Indeed I am

innī

رَسُولُ

(the) Messenger

rasūlu

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

إِلَيْكُمْ

to you

ilaykum

جَمِيعًا

all

jamīʿan

ٱلَّذِى

the One

alladhī

لَهُۥ

for Whom

lahu

مُلْكُ

(is the) dominion

mul'ku

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

لَآ

(There is) no

إِلَـٰهَ

god

ilāha

إِلَّا

except

illā

هُوَ

Him

huwa

يُحْىِۦ

He gives life

yuḥ'yī

وَيُمِيتُ ۖ

and causes death

wayumītu

فَـَٔامِنُوا۟

So believe

faāminū

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَرَسُولِهِ

and His Messenger

warasūlihi

ٱلنَّبِىِّ

the Prophet

l-nabiyi

ٱلْأُمِّىِّ

the unlettered

l-umiyi

ٱلَّذِى

the one who

alladhī

يُؤْمِنُ

believes

yu'minu

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَكَلِمَـٰتِهِۦ

and His Words

wakalimātihi

وَٱتَّبِعُوهُ

and follow him

wa-ittabiʿūhu

لَعَلَّكُمْ

so that you may

laʿallakum

تَهْتَدُونَ

(be) guided

tahtadūna

١٥٨

Say, [O Muḥammad], "O mankind, indeed I am the Messenger of Allāh to you all, [from Him] to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death." So believe in Allāh and His Messenger, the unlettered prophet, who believes in Allāh and His words, and follow him that you may be guided.

— Saheeh International

وَمِن

And among

wamin

قَوْمِ

(the) people

qawmi

مُوسَىٰٓ

(of) Musa

mūsā

أُمَّةٌۭ

(is) a community

ummatun

يَهْدُونَ

(which) guides

yahdūna

بِٱلْحَقِّ

with truth

bil-ḥaqi

وَبِهِۦ

and by it

wabihi

يَعْدِلُونَ

establishes justice

yaʿdilūna

١٥٩

And among the people of Moses is a community1 which guides by truth and by it establishes justice.

— Saheeh International

وَقَطَّعْنَـٰهُمُ

And We divided them

waqaṭṭaʿnāhumu

ٱثْنَتَىْ

(into) two

ith'natay

عَشْرَةَ

(and) ten [i.e. twelve]

ʿashrata

أَسْبَاطًا

tribes

asbāṭan

أُمَمًۭا ۚ

(as) communities

umaman

وَأَوْحَيْنَآ

And We inspired

wa-awḥaynā

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

مُوسَىٰٓ

Musa

mūsā

إِذِ

when

idhi

ٱسْتَسْقَىٰهُ

asked him for water

is'tasqāhu

قَوْمُهُۥٓ

his people

qawmuhu

أَنِ

[that]

ani

ٱضْرِب

Strike

iḍ'rib

بِّعَصَاكَ

with your staff

biʿaṣāka

ٱلْحَجَرَ ۖ

the stone

l-ḥajara

فَٱنۢبَجَسَتْ

Then gushed forth

fa-inbajasat

مِنْهُ

from it

min'hu

ٱثْنَتَا

two

ith'natā

عَشْرَةَ

(and) ten [i.e. twelve]

ʿashrata

عَيْنًۭا ۖ

springs

ʿaynan

قَدْ

Certainly

qad

عَلِمَ

knew

ʿalima

كُلُّ

each

kullu

أُنَاسٍۢ

people

unāsin

مَّشْرَبَهُمْ ۚ

their drinking place

mashrabahum

وَظَلَّلْنَا

And We shaded

waẓallalnā

عَلَيْهِمُ

[on] them

ʿalayhimu

ٱلْغَمَـٰمَ

(with) the clouds

l-ghamāma

وَأَنزَلْنَا

and We sent down

wa-anzalnā

عَلَيْهِمُ

upon them

ʿalayhimu

ٱلْمَنَّ

the manna

l-mana

وَٱلسَّلْوَىٰ ۖ

and the quails

wal-salwā

كُلُوا۟

Eat

kulū

مِن

from

min

طَيِّبَـٰتِ

(the) good things

ṭayyibāti

مَا

which

رَزَقْنَـٰكُمْ ۚ

We have provided you

razaqnākum

وَمَا

And not

wamā

ظَلَمُونَا

they wronged Us

ẓalamūnā

وَلَـٰكِن

but

walākin

كَانُوٓا۟

they were

kānū

أَنفُسَهُمْ

(to) themselves

anfusahum

يَظْلِمُونَ

doing wrong

yaẓlimūna

١٦٠

And We divided them into twelve descendant tribes1 [as distinct] nations. And We inspired to Moses when his people implored him for water, "Strike with your staff the stone," and there gushed forth from it twelve springs. Every people [i.e., tribe] knew its watering place. And We shaded them with clouds and sent down upon them manna and quails, [saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you." And they wronged Us not, but they were [only] wronging themselves.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

قِيلَ

it was said

qīla

لَهُمُ

to them

lahumu

ٱسْكُنُوا۟

Live

us'kunū

هَـٰذِهِ

(in) this

hādhihi

ٱلْقَرْيَةَ

city

l-qaryata

وَكُلُوا۟

and eat

wakulū

مِنْهَا

from it

min'hā

حَيْثُ

wherever

ḥaythu

شِئْتُمْ

you wish

shi'tum

وَقُولُوا۟

and say

waqūlū

حِطَّةٌۭ

Repentance

ḥiṭṭatun

وَٱدْخُلُوا۟

and enter

wa-ud'khulū

ٱلْبَابَ

the gate

l-bāba

سُجَّدًۭا

prostrating

sujjadan

نَّغْفِرْ

We will forgive

naghfir

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

خَطِيٓـَٔـٰتِكُمْ ۚ

your sins

khaṭīātikum

سَنَزِيدُ

We will increase (reward)

sanazīdu

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

(of) the good-doers

l-muḥ'sinīna

١٦١

And [mention, O Muḥammad], when it was said to them, "Dwell in this city [i.e., Jerusalem] and eat from it wherever you will and say, 'Relieve us of our burdens [i.e., sins],' and enter the gate bowing humbly; We will [then] forgive you your sins. We will increase the doers of good [in goodness and reward]."

— Saheeh International

فَبَدَّلَ

But changed

fabaddala

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ظَلَمُوا۟

wronged

ẓalamū

مِنْهُمْ

among them

min'hum

قَوْلًا

word

qawlan

غَيْرَ

other than

ghayra

ٱلَّذِى

(that) which

alladhī

قِيلَ

was said

qīla

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

فَأَرْسَلْنَا

So We sent

fa-arsalnā

عَلَيْهِمْ

upon them

ʿalayhim

رِجْزًۭا

torment

rij'zan

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

the sky

l-samāi

بِمَا

because

bimā

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

يَظْلِمُونَ

doing wrong

yaẓlimūna

١٦٢

But those who wronged among them changed [the words] to a statement other than that which had been said to them. So We sent upon them a punishment from the sky for the wrong that they were doing.

— Saheeh International

وَسْـَٔلْهُمْ

And ask them

wasalhum

عَنِ

about

ʿani

ٱلْقَرْيَةِ

the town

l-qaryati

ٱلَّتِى

which

allatī

كَانَتْ

was

kānat

حَاضِرَةَ

situated

ḥāḍirata

ٱلْبَحْرِ

(by) the sea

l-baḥri

إِذْ

when

idh

يَعْدُونَ

they transgressed

yaʿdūna

فِى

in

ٱلسَّبْتِ

the (matter of) Sabbath

l-sabti

إِذْ

when

idh

تَأْتِيهِمْ

came to them

tatīhim

حِيتَانُهُمْ

their fish

ḥītānuhum

يَوْمَ

(on the) day

yawma

سَبْتِهِمْ

(of) their Sabbath

sabtihim

شُرَّعًۭا

visibly

shurraʿan

وَيَوْمَ

and (on the) day

wayawma

لَا

not

يَسْبِتُونَ ۙ

they had Sabbath

yasbitūna

لَا

(they did) not

تَأْتِيهِمْ ۚ

come to them

tatīhim

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

نَبْلُوهُم

We test them

nablūhum

بِمَا

because

bimā

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

يَفْسُقُونَ

defiantly disobeying

yafsuqūna

١٦٣

And ask them about the town that was by the sea - when they transgressed in [the matter of] the sabbath - when their fish came to them openly on their sabbath day, and the day they had no sabbath they did not come to them. Thus did We give them trial because they were defiantly disobedient.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

قَالَتْ

said

qālat

أُمَّةٌۭ

a community

ummatun

مِّنْهُمْ

among them

min'hum

لِمَ

Why

lima

تَعِظُونَ

(do) you preach

taʿiẓūna

قَوْمًا ۙ

a people

qawman

ٱللَّهُ

(whom) Allah

l-lahu

مُهْلِكُهُمْ

(is going to) destroy them

muh'likuhum

أَوْ

or

aw

مُعَذِّبُهُمْ

punish them

muʿadhibuhum

عَذَابًۭا

(with) a punishment

ʿadhāban

شَدِيدًۭا ۖ

severe

shadīdan

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

مَعْذِرَةً

To be absolved

maʿdhiratan

إِلَىٰ

before

ilā

رَبِّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbikum

وَلَعَلَّهُمْ

and that they may

walaʿallahum

يَتَّقُونَ

become righteous

yattaqūna

١٦٤

And when a community among them said, "Why do you advise [or warn] a people whom Allāh is [about] to destroy or to punish with a severe punishment?" they [the advisors] said, "To be absolved before your Lord and perhaps they may fear Him."

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

So when

falammā

نَسُوا۟

they forgot

nasū

مَا

what

ذُكِّرُوا۟

they had been reminded

dhukkirū

بِهِۦٓ

with [it]

bihi

أَنجَيْنَا

We saved

anjaynā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

يَنْهَوْنَ

forbade

yanhawna

عَنِ

[from]

ʿani

ٱلسُّوٓءِ

the evil

l-sūi

وَأَخَذْنَا

and We seized

wa-akhadhnā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ظَلَمُوا۟

wronged

ẓalamū

بِعَذَابٍۭ

with a punishment

biʿadhābin

بَـِٔيسٍۭ

wretched

baīsin

بِمَا

because

bimā

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

يَفْسُقُونَ

defiantly disobeying

yafsuqūna

١٦٥

And when they [i.e., those advised] forgot that by which they had been reminded, We saved those who had forbidden evil and seized those who wronged, with a wretched punishment, because they were defiantly disobeying.

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

So when

falammā

عَتَوْا۟

they exceeded all bounds

ʿataw

عَن

about

ʿan

مَّا

what

نُهُوا۟

they were forbidden

nuhū

عَنْهُ

from it

ʿanhu

قُلْنَا

We said

qul'nā

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

كُونُوا۟

Be

kūnū

قِرَدَةً

apes

qiradatan

خَـٰسِـِٔينَ

despised

khāsiīna

١٦٦

So when they were insolent about that which they had been forbidden, We said to them, "Be apes, despised."

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

تَأَذَّنَ

declared

ta-adhana

رَبُّكَ

your Lord

rabbuka

لَيَبْعَثَنَّ

that He would surely send

layabʿathanna

عَلَيْهِمْ

upon them

ʿalayhim

إِلَىٰ

till

ilā

يَوْمِ

(the) Day

yawmi

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

مَن

(those) who

man

يَسُومُهُمْ

would afflict them

yasūmuhum

سُوٓءَ

(with) a grievous

sūa

ٱلْعَذَابِ ۗ

[the] punishment

l-ʿadhābi

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

رَبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

لَسَرِيعُ

(is) surely swift

lasarīʿu

ٱلْعِقَابِ ۖ

(in) the retribution

l-ʿiqābi

وَإِنَّهُۥ

but indeed, He

wa-innahu

لَغَفُورٌۭ

(is) surely Oft-Forgiving

laghafūrun

رَّحِيمٌۭ

Most Merciful

raḥīmun

١٦٧

And [mention] when your Lord declared that He would surely [continue to] send upon them until the Day of Resurrection those who would afflict them with the worst torment. Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty; but indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.

— Saheeh International

وَقَطَّعْنَـٰهُمْ

And We divided them

waqaṭṭaʿnāhum

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

أُمَمًۭا ۖ

(as) nations

umaman

مِّنْهُمُ

Among them

min'humu

ٱلصَّـٰلِحُونَ

(are) the righteous

l-ṣāliḥūna

وَمِنْهُمْ

and among them

wamin'hum

دُونَ

(are) other than

dūna

ذَٰلِكَ ۖ

that

dhālika

وَبَلَوْنَـٰهُم

And We tested them

wabalawnāhum

بِٱلْحَسَنَـٰتِ

with the good

bil-ḥasanāti

وَٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ

and the bad

wal-sayiāti

لَعَلَّهُمْ

so that they may

laʿallahum

يَرْجِعُونَ

return

yarjiʿūna

١٦٨

And We divided them throughout the earth into nations. Of them some were righteous, and of them some were otherwise. And We tested them with good [times] and bad that perhaps they would return [to obedience].

— Saheeh International

فَخَلَفَ

Then succeeded

fakhalafa

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِهِمْ

after them

baʿdihim

خَلْفٌۭ

successors

khalfun

وَرِثُوا۟

(who) inherited

warithū

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

يَأْخُذُونَ

taking

yakhudhūna

عَرَضَ

goods

ʿaraḍa

هَـٰذَا

(of) this

hādhā

ٱلْأَدْنَىٰ

the lower (life)

l-adnā

وَيَقُولُونَ

and they say

wayaqūlūna

سَيُغْفَرُ

It will be forgiven

sayugh'faru

لَنَا

for us

lanā

وَإِن

And if

wa-in

يَأْتِهِمْ

comes to them

yatihim

عَرَضٌۭ

goods

ʿaraḍun

مِّثْلُهُۥ

similar to it

mith'luhu

يَأْخُذُوهُ ۚ

they will take it

yakhudhūhu

أَلَمْ

Was not

alam

يُؤْخَذْ

taken

yu'khadh

عَلَيْهِم

on them

ʿalayhim

مِّيثَـٰقُ

Covenant

mīthāqu

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

(of) the Book

l-kitābi

أَن

that

an

لَّا

not

يَقُولُوا۟

they will say

yaqūlū

عَلَى

about

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلْحَقَّ

the truth

l-ḥaqa

وَدَرَسُوا۟

while they studied

wadarasū

مَا

what

فِيهِ ۗ

(is) in it

fīhi

وَٱلدَّارُ

And the home

wal-dāru

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ

(of) the Hereafter

l-ākhiratu

خَيْرٌۭ

(is) better

khayrun

لِّلَّذِينَ

for those who

lilladhīna

يَتَّقُونَ ۗ

fear Allah

yattaqūna

أَفَلَا

So will not

afalā

تَعْقِلُونَ

you use intellect

taʿqilūna

١٦٩

And there followed them successors who inherited the Scripture [while] taking the commodities1 of this lower life and saying, "It will be forgiven for us." And if an offer like it2 comes to them, they will [again] take it. Was not the covenant of the Scripture [i.e., the Torah] taken from them that they would not say about Allāh except the truth, and they studied what was in it? And the home of the Hereafter is better for those who fear Allāh, so will you not use reason?

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

يُمَسِّكُونَ

hold fast

yumassikūna

بِٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

to the Book

bil-kitābi

وَأَقَامُوا۟

and establish

wa-aqāmū

ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ

the prayer

l-ṣalata

إِنَّا

indeed, We

innā

لَا

(will) not

نُضِيعُ

[We] let go waste

nuḍīʿu

أَجْرَ

(the) reward

ajra

ٱلْمُصْلِحِينَ

(of) the reformers

l-muṣ'liḥīna

١٧٠

But those who hold fast to the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] and establish prayer - indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of the reformers.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

نَتَقْنَا

We raised

nataqnā

ٱلْجَبَلَ

the mountain

l-jabala

فَوْقَهُمْ

above them

fawqahum

كَأَنَّهُۥ

as if it was

ka-annahu

ظُلَّةٌۭ

a canopy

ẓullatun

وَظَنُّوٓا۟

and they thought

waẓannū

أَنَّهُۥ

that it

annahu

وَاقِعٌۢ

(would) fall

wāqiʿun

بِهِمْ

upon them

bihim

خُذُوا۟

(We said), "Take

khudhū

مَآ

what

ءَاتَيْنَـٰكُم

We have given you

ātaynākum

بِقُوَّةٍۢ

with strength

biquwwatin

وَٱذْكُرُوا۟

and remember

wa-udh'kurū

مَا

what

فِيهِ

(is) in it

fīhi

لَعَلَّكُمْ

so that you may

laʿallakum

تَتَّقُونَ

fear Allah

tattaqūna

١٧١

And [mention] when We raised the mountain above them as if it was a dark cloud and they were certain that it would fall upon them,1 [and Allāh said], "Take what We have given you with determination and remember what is in it that you might fear Allāh."

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

أَخَذَ

(was) taken

akhadha

رَبُّكَ

(by) your Lord

rabbuka

مِنۢ

from

min

بَنِىٓ

(the) Children

banī

ءَادَمَ

(of) Adam

ādama

مِن

from

min

ظُهُورِهِمْ

their loins

ẓuhūrihim

ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ

their descendants

dhurriyyatahum

وَأَشْهَدَهُمْ

and made them testify

wa-ashhadahum

عَلَىٰٓ

over

ʿalā

أَنفُسِهِمْ

themselves

anfusihim

أَلَسْتُ

Am I not

alastu

بِرَبِّكُمْ ۖ

your Lord

birabbikum

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

بَلَىٰ ۛ

Yes

balā

شَهِدْنَآ ۛ

we have testified

shahid'nā

أَن

Lest

an

تَقُولُوا۟

you say

taqūlū

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

إِنَّا

Indeed

innā

كُنَّا

we were

kunnā

عَنْ

about

ʿan

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

غَـٰفِلِينَ

unaware

ghāfilīna

١٧٢

And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], "Am I not your Lord?" They said, "Yes, we have testified." [This] - lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection, "Indeed, we were of this unaware."

— Saheeh International

أَوْ

Or

aw

تَقُولُوٓا۟

you say

taqūlū

إِنَّمَآ

Only

innamā

أَشْرَكَ

partners (were) associated (with Allah)

ashraka

ءَابَآؤُنَا

(by) our forefathers

ābāunā

مِن

from

min

قَبْلُ

before (us)

qablu

وَكُنَّا

and we are

wakunnā

ذُرِّيَّةًۭ

descendants

dhurriyyatan

مِّنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِهِمْ ۖ

after them

baʿdihim

أَفَتُهْلِكُنَا

So will You destroy us

afatuh'likunā

بِمَا

for what

bimā

فَعَلَ

did

faʿala

ٱلْمُبْطِلُونَ

the falsifiers

l-mub'ṭilūna

١٧٣

Or [lest] you say, "It was only that our fathers associated [others in worship] with Allāh before, and we were but descendants after them. Then would You destroy us for what the falsifiers have done?"

— Saheeh International

وَكَذَٰلِكَ

And thus

wakadhālika

نُفَصِّلُ

We explain

nufaṣṣilu

ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ

the Verses

l-āyāti

وَلَعَلَّهُمْ

so that they may

walaʿallahum

يَرْجِعُونَ

return

yarjiʿūna

١٧٤

And thus do We [explain in] detail the verses, and perhaps they will return.1

— Saheeh International

وَٱتْلُ

And recite

wa-ut'lu

عَلَيْهِمْ

to them

ʿalayhim

نَبَأَ

(the) story

naba-a

ٱلَّذِىٓ

(of the) one whom

alladhī

ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ

We gave [him]

ātaynāhu

ءَايَـٰتِنَا

Our Verses

āyātinā

فَٱنسَلَخَ

but he detached

fa-insalakha

مِنْهَا

[from] them

min'hā

فَأَتْبَعَهُ

so followed him

fa-atbaʿahu

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ

the Shaitaan

l-shayṭānu

فَكَانَ

and he became

fakāna

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْغَاوِينَ

those gone astray

l-ghāwīna

١٧٥

And recite to them, [O Muḥammad], the news of him1 to whom We gave [knowledge of] Our signs, but he detached himself from them; so Satan pursued him, and he became of the deviators.2

— Saheeh International

وَلَوْ

And if

walaw

شِئْنَا

We willed

shi'nā

لَرَفَعْنَـٰهُ

surely, We (could) have raised him

larafaʿnāhu

بِهَا

with these

bihā

وَلَـٰكِنَّهُۥٓ

[and] but he

walākinnahu

أَخْلَدَ

adhered

akhlada

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

وَٱتَّبَعَ

and followed

wa-ittabaʿa

هَوَىٰهُ ۚ

his (vain) desires

hawāhu

فَمَثَلُهُۥ

So his example

famathaluhu

كَمَثَلِ

(is) like (the) example

kamathali

ٱلْكَلْبِ

(of) the dog

l-kalbi

إِن

if

in

تَحْمِلْ

you attack

taḥmil

عَلَيْهِ

[on] him

ʿalayhi

يَلْهَثْ

he lolls out his tongue

yalhath

أَوْ

or

aw

تَتْرُكْهُ

if you leave him

tatruk'hu

يَلْهَث ۚ

he lolls out his tongue

yalhath

ذَّٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

مَثَلُ

(is the) example

mathalu

ٱلْقَوْمِ

(of) the people

l-qawmi

ٱلَّذِينَ

who

alladhīna

كَذَّبُوا۟

denied

kadhabū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا ۚ

[in] Our Signs

biāyātinā

فَٱقْصُصِ

So relate

fa-uq'ṣuṣi

ٱلْقَصَصَ

the story

l-qaṣaṣa

لَعَلَّهُمْ

so that they may

laʿallahum

يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

reflect

yatafakkarūna

١٧٦

And if We had willed, We could have elevated him thereby,1 but he adhered [instead] to the earth2 and followed his own desire. So his example is like that of the dog: if you chase him, he pants, or if you leave him, he [still] pants. That is the example of the people who denied Our signs.3 So relate the stories that perhaps they will give thought.

— Saheeh International

سَآءَ

Evil

sāa

مَثَلًا

(as) an example

mathalan

ٱلْقَوْمُ

(are) the people

l-qawmu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَذَّبُوا۟

denied

kadhabū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا

Our Signs

biāyātinā

وَأَنفُسَهُمْ

and themselves

wa-anfusahum

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

يَظْلِمُونَ

wrong

yaẓlimūna

١٧٧

How evil an example [is that of] the people who denied Our signs and used to wrong themselves.

— Saheeh International

مَن

Whoever

man

يَهْدِ

(is) guided

yahdi

ٱللَّهُ

(by) Allah

l-lahu

فَهُوَ

then he

fahuwa

ٱلْمُهْتَدِى ۖ

(is) the guided one

l-muh'tadī

وَمَن

while whoever

waman

يُضْلِلْ

He lets go astray

yuḍ'lil

فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

then those

fa-ulāika

هُمُ

[they]

humu

ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ

(are) the losers

l-khāsirūna

١٧٨

Whoever Allāh guides - he is the [rightly] guided; and whoever He sends astray1 - it is those who are the losers.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

ذَرَأْنَا

We have created

dharanā

لِجَهَنَّمَ

for Hell

lijahannama

كَثِيرًۭا

many

kathīran

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْجِنِّ

the jinn

l-jini

وَٱلْإِنسِ ۖ

and men

wal-insi

لَهُمْ

For them

lahum

قُلُوبٌۭ

(are) hearts

qulūbun

لَّا

(but) not

يَفْقَهُونَ

they understand

yafqahūna

بِهَا

with them

bihā

وَلَهُمْ

and for them

walahum

أَعْيُنٌۭ

(are) eyes

aʿyunun

لَّا

(but) not

يُبْصِرُونَ

they see

yub'ṣirūna

بِهَا

with them

bihā

وَلَهُمْ

and for them

walahum

ءَاذَانٌۭ

(are) ears

ādhānun

لَّا

(but) not

يَسْمَعُونَ

they hear

yasmaʿūna

بِهَآ ۚ

with them

bihā

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

كَٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِ

(are) like cattle

kal-anʿāmi

بَلْ

nay

bal

هُمْ

they

hum

أَضَلُّ ۚ

(are) more astray

aḍallu

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

هُمُ

they

humu

ٱلْغَـٰفِلُونَ

(are) the heedless

l-ghāfilūna

١٧٩

And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray.1 It is they who are the heedless.

— Saheeh International

وَلِلَّهِ

And for Allah

walillahi

ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ

(are) the names

l-asmāu

ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ

the most beautiful

l-ḥus'nā

فَٱدْعُوهُ

so invoke Him

fa-id'ʿūhu

بِهَا ۖ

by them

bihā

وَذَرُوا۟

And leave

wadharū

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

يُلْحِدُونَ

deviate

yul'ḥidūna

فِىٓ

concerning

أَسْمَـٰٓئِهِۦ ۚ

His names

asmāihi

سَيُجْزَوْنَ

They will be recompensed

sayuj'zawna

مَا

for what

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

يَعْمَلُونَ

do

yaʿmalūna

١٨٠

And to Allāh belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names.1 They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.

— Saheeh International

وَمِمَّنْ

And of (those) whom

wamimman

خَلَقْنَآ

We have created

khalaqnā

أُمَّةٌۭ

(is) a nation

ummatun

يَهْدُونَ

who guides

yahdūna

بِٱلْحَقِّ

with the truth

bil-ḥaqi

وَبِهِۦ

and thereby

wabihi

يَعْدِلُونَ

they establish justice

yaʿdilūna

١٨١

And among those We created is a community1 which guides by truth and thereby establishes justice.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

But those who

wa-alladhīna

كَذَّبُوا۟

denied

kadhabū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا

Our Signs

biāyātinā

سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم

We will gradually lead them

sanastadrijuhum

مِّنْ

from

min

حَيْثُ

where

ḥaythu

لَا

not

يَعْلَمُونَ

they know

yaʿlamūna

١٨٢

But those who deny Our signs - We will progressively lead them [to destruction]1 from where they do not know.

— Saheeh International

وَأُمْلِى

And I will give respite

wa-um'lī

لَهُمْ ۚ

to them

lahum

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

كَيْدِى

My plan

kaydī

مَتِينٌ

(is) firm

matīnun

١٨٣

And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm.

— Saheeh International

أَوَلَمْ

Do not

awalam

يَتَفَكَّرُوا۟ ۗ

they reflect

yatafakkarū

مَا

Not

بِصَاحِبِهِم

in their companion

biṣāḥibihim

مِّن

[of]

min

جِنَّةٍ ۚ

(is) any madness

jinnatin

إِنْ

Not

in

هُوَ

he

huwa

إِلَّا

(is) but

illā

نَذِيرٌۭ

a warner

nadhīrun

مُّبِينٌ

clear

mubīnun

١٨٤

Then do they not give thought? There is in their companion [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] no madness. He is not but a clear warner.

— Saheeh International

أَوَلَمْ

Do not

awalam

يَنظُرُوا۟

they look

yanẓurū

فِى

in

مَلَكُوتِ

(the) dominion

malakūti

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

وَمَا

and what

wamā

خَلَقَ

has (been) created

khalaqa

ٱللَّهُ

(by) Allah

l-lahu

مِن

of

min

شَىْءٍۢ

(every)thing

shayin

وَأَنْ

and that

wa-an

عَسَىٰٓ

perhaps

ʿasā

أَن

[that]

an

يَكُونَ

has

yakūna

قَدِ

verily

qadi

ٱقْتَرَبَ

come near

iq'taraba

أَجَلُهُمْ ۖ

their term

ajaluhum

فَبِأَىِّ

So in what

fabi-ayyi

حَدِيثٍۭ

statement

ḥadīthin

بَعْدَهُۥ

after this

baʿdahu

يُؤْمِنُونَ

will they believe

yu'minūna

١٨٥

Do they not look into the realm of the heavens and the earth and everything that Allāh has created and [think] that perhaps their appointed time has come near? So in what statement [i.e., message] hereafter will they believe?

— Saheeh International

مَن

Whoever

man

يُضْلِلِ

(is) let go astray

yuḍ'lili

ٱللَّهُ

(by) Allah

l-lahu

فَلَا

then (there is) no

falā

هَادِىَ

guide

hādiya

لَهُۥ ۚ

for him

lahu

وَيَذَرُهُمْ

And He leaves them

wayadharuhum

فِى

in

طُغْيَـٰنِهِمْ

their transgression

ṭugh'yānihim

يَعْمَهُونَ

wandering blindly

yaʿmahūna

١٨٦

Whoever Allāh sends astray - there is no guide for him. And He leaves them in their transgression, wandering blindly.

— Saheeh International

يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ

They ask you

yasalūnaka

عَنِ

about

ʿani

ٱلسَّاعَةِ

the Hour

l-sāʿati

أَيَّانَ

when will be

ayyāna

مُرْسَىٰهَا ۖ

its appointed time

mur'sāhā

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

عِلْمُهَا

its knowledge

ʿil'muhā

عِندَ

(is) with

ʿinda

رَبِّى ۖ

my Lord

rabbī

لَا

no (one)

يُجَلِّيهَا

can reveal [it]

yujallīhā

لِوَقْتِهَآ

its time

liwaqtihā

إِلَّا

except

illā

هُوَ ۚ

Him

huwa

ثَقُلَتْ

It lays heavily

thaqulat

فِى

in

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

لَا

Not

تَأْتِيكُمْ

will it come to you

tatīkum

إِلَّا

but

illā

بَغْتَةًۭ ۗ

suddenly

baghtatan

يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ

They ask you

yasalūnaka

كَأَنَّكَ

as if you

ka-annaka

حَفِىٌّ

(were) well informed

ḥafiyyun

عَنْهَا ۖ

about it

ʿanhā

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

عِلْمُهَا

its knowledge

ʿil'muhā

عِندَ

(is) with

ʿinda

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَلَـٰكِنَّ

but

walākinna

أَكْثَرَ

most

akthara

ٱلنَّاسِ

(of) the people

l-nāsi

لَا

(do) not

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

١٨٧

They ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival?1 Say, "Its knowledge is only with my Lord. None will reveal its time except Him. It lays heavily2 upon the heavens and the earth. It will not come upon you except unexpectedly." They ask you as if you are familiar with it. Say, "Its knowledge is only with Allāh, but most of the people do not know."

— Saheeh International

قُل

Say

qul

لَّآ

Not

أَمْلِكُ

I have power

amliku

لِنَفْسِى

for myself

linafsī

نَفْعًۭا

(to) benefit

nafʿan

وَلَا

and no

walā

ضَرًّا

(power to) harm

ḍarran

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَا

what

شَآءَ

wills

shāa

ٱللَّهُ ۚ

Allah

l-lahu

وَلَوْ

And if

walaw

كُنتُ

I would

kuntu

أَعْلَمُ

know

aʿlamu

ٱلْغَيْبَ

(of) the unseen

l-ghayba

لَٱسْتَكْثَرْتُ

surely I could have multiplied

la-is'takthartu

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْخَيْرِ

the good

l-khayri

وَمَا

and not

wamā

مَسَّنِىَ

(could) have touched me

massaniya

ٱلسُّوٓءُ ۚ

the evil

l-sūu

إِنْ

Not

in

أَنَا۠

(am) I

anā

إِلَّا

except

illā

نَذِيرٌۭ

a warner

nadhīrun

وَبَشِيرٌۭ

and a bearer of good tidings

wabashīrun

لِّقَوْمٍۢ

to a people

liqawmin

يُؤْمِنُونَ

who believe

yu'minūna

١٨٨

Say, "I hold not for myself [the power of] benefit or harm, except what Allāh has willed. And if I knew the unseen, I could have acquired much wealth, and no harm would have touched me. I am not except a warner and a bringer of good tidings to a people who believe."

— Saheeh International

۞ هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلَّذِى

(is) the One Who

alladhī

خَلَقَكُم

created you

khalaqakum

مِّن

from

min

نَّفْسٍۢ

a soul

nafsin

وَٰحِدَةٍۢ

single

wāḥidatin

وَجَعَلَ

and made

wajaʿala

مِنْهَا

from it

min'hā

زَوْجَهَا

its mate

zawjahā

لِيَسْكُنَ

that he might live

liyaskuna

إِلَيْهَا ۖ

with her

ilayhā

فَلَمَّا

And when

falammā

تَغَشَّىٰهَا

he covers her

taghashāhā

حَمَلَتْ

she carries

ḥamalat

حَمْلًا

a burden

ḥamlan

خَفِيفًۭا

light

khafīfan

فَمَرَّتْ

and continues

famarrat

بِهِۦ ۖ

with it

bihi

فَلَمَّآ

But when

falammā

أَثْقَلَت

she grows heavy

athqalat

دَّعَوَا

they both invoke

daʿawā

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

رَبَّهُمَا

their Lord

rabbahumā

لَئِنْ

If

la-in

ءَاتَيْتَنَا

You give us

ātaytanā

صَـٰلِحًۭا

a righteous (child)

ṣāliḥan

لَّنَكُونَنَّ

surely we will be

lanakūnanna

مِنَ

among

mina

ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ

the thankful

l-shākirīna

١٨٩

It is He who created you from one soul and created from it its mate that he1 might dwell in security with her. And when he [i.e., man] covers her,2 she carries a light burden [i.e., a pregnancy] and continues therein. And when it becomes heavy, they both invoke Allāh, their Lord, "If You should give us a good3 [child], we will surely be among the grateful."

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّآ

But when

falammā

ءَاتَىٰهُمَا

He gives them

ātāhumā

صَـٰلِحًۭا

a good, (child)

ṣāliḥan

جَعَلَا

they make

jaʿalā

لَهُۥ

for Him

lahu

شُرَكَآءَ

partners

shurakāa

فِيمَآ

in what

fīmā

ءَاتَىٰهُمَا ۚ

He has given them

ātāhumā

فَتَعَـٰلَى

But exalted

fataʿālā

ٱللَّهُ

(is) Allah

l-lahu

عَمَّا

above what

ʿammā

يُشْرِكُونَ

they associate (with Him)

yush'rikūna

١٩٠

But when He gives them a good [child], they1 ascribe partners to Him concerning that which He has given them. Exalted is Allāh above what they associate with Him.

— Saheeh International

أَيُشْرِكُونَ

Do they associate

ayush'rikūna

مَا

what

لَا

(can) not

يَخْلُقُ

create

yakhluqu

شَيْـًۭٔا

anything

shayan

وَهُمْ

and they

wahum

يُخْلَقُونَ

are created

yukh'laqūna

١٩١

Do they associate with Him those who create nothing and they are [themselves] created?

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And not

walā

يَسْتَطِيعُونَ

they are able

yastaṭīʿūna

لَهُمْ

to (give) them

lahum

نَصْرًۭا

any help

naṣran

وَلَآ

and not

walā

أَنفُسَهُمْ

themselves

anfusahum

يَنصُرُونَ

can they help

yanṣurūna

١٩٢

And they [i.e., the false deities] are unable to [give] them help, nor can they help themselves.

— Saheeh International

وَإِن

And if

wa-in

تَدْعُوهُمْ

you call them

tadʿūhum

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلْهُدَىٰ

the guidance

l-hudā

لَا

not

يَتَّبِعُوكُمْ ۚ

will they follow you

yattabiʿūkum

سَوَآءٌ

(It is) same

sawāon

عَلَيْكُمْ

for you

ʿalaykum

أَدَعَوْتُمُوهُمْ

whether you call them

adaʿawtumūhum

أَمْ

or

am

أَنتُمْ

you

antum

صَـٰمِتُونَ

remain silent

ṣāmitūna

١٩٣

And if you [believers] invite them to guidance, they will not follow you. It is all the same for you whether you invite them or you are silent.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those whom

alladhīna

تَدْعُونَ

you call

tadʿūna

مِن

from

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

عِبَادٌ

(are) slaves

ʿibādun

أَمْثَالُكُمْ ۖ

like you

amthālukum

فَٱدْعُوهُمْ

So invoke them

fa-id'ʿūhum

فَلْيَسْتَجِيبُوا۟

and let them respond

falyastajībū

لَكُمْ

to you

lakum

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you are

kuntum

صَـٰدِقِينَ

truthful

ṣādiqīna

١٩٤

Indeed, those you [polytheists] call upon besides Allāh are servants [i.e., creations] like you. So call upon them and let them respond to you, if you should be truthful.

— Saheeh International

أَلَهُمْ

Are for them

alahum

أَرْجُلٌۭ

feet

arjulun

يَمْشُونَ

(to) walk

yamshūna

بِهَآ ۖ

with [it]

bihā

أَمْ

or

am

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

أَيْدٍۢ

hands

aydin

يَبْطِشُونَ

(to) hold

yabṭishūna

بِهَآ ۖ

with [it]

bihā

أَمْ

or

am

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

أَعْيُنٌۭ

eyes

aʿyunun

يُبْصِرُونَ

(to) see

yub'ṣirūna

بِهَآ ۖ

with [it]

bihā

أَمْ

or

am

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

ءَاذَانٌۭ

ears

ādhānun

يَسْمَعُونَ

(to) hear

yasmaʿūna

بِهَا ۗ

with [it]

bihā

قُلِ

Say

quli

ٱدْعُوا۟

Call

id'ʿū

شُرَكَآءَكُمْ

your partners

shurakāakum

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

كِيدُونِ

scheme against me

kīdūni

فَلَا

and (do) not

falā

تُنظِرُونِ

give me respite

tunẓirūni

١٩٥

Do they have feet by which they walk? Or do they have hands by which they strike? Or do they have eyes by which they see? Or do they have ears by which they hear? Say, [O Muḥammad], "Call your 'partners' and then conspire against me and give me no respite.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

وَلِـِّۧىَ

my protector

waliyyiya

ٱللَّهُ

(is) Allah

l-lahu

ٱلَّذِى

the One Who

alladhī

نَزَّلَ

revealed

nazzala

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ ۖ

the Book

l-kitāba

وَهُوَ

And He

wahuwa

يَتَوَلَّى

protects

yatawallā

ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

the righteous

l-ṣāliḥīna

١٩٦

Indeed, my protector is Allāh, who has sent down the Book; and He is an ally to the righteous.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those whom

wa-alladhīna

تَدْعُونَ

you invoke

tadʿūna

مِن

from

min

دُونِهِۦ

besides Him

dūnihi

لَا

not

يَسْتَطِيعُونَ

they are able

yastaṭīʿūna

نَصْرَكُمْ

(to) help you

naṣrakum

وَلَآ

and not

walā

أَنفُسَهُمْ

themselves

anfusahum

يَنصُرُونَ

can they help

yanṣurūna

١٩٧

And those you call upon besides Him are unable to help you, nor can they help themselves."

— Saheeh International

وَإِن

And if

wa-in

تَدْعُوهُمْ

you call them

tadʿūhum

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلْهُدَىٰ

the guidance

l-hudā

لَا

not

يَسْمَعُوا۟ ۖ

do they not

yasmaʿū

وَتَرَىٰهُمْ

And you see them

watarāhum

يَنظُرُونَ

looking

yanẓurūna

إِلَيْكَ

at you

ilayka

وَهُمْ

but they

wahum

لَا

not

يُبْصِرُونَ

(do) they see

yub'ṣirūna

١٩٨

And if you invite them to guidance, they do not hear; and you see them looking at you while they do not see.

— Saheeh International

خُذِ

Hold

khudhi

ٱلْعَفْوَ

(to) forgiveness

l-ʿafwa

وَأْمُرْ

and enjoin

wamur

بِٱلْعُرْفِ

the good

bil-ʿur'fi

وَأَعْرِضْ

and turn away

wa-aʿriḍ

عَنِ

from

ʿani

ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ

the ignorant

l-jāhilīna

١٩٩

Take what is given freely,1 enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.

— Saheeh International

وَإِمَّا

And if

wa-immā

يَنزَغَنَّكَ

an evil suggestion comes to you

yanzaghannaka

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ

[the] Shaitaan

l-shayṭāni

نَزْغٌۭ

[an evil suggestion]

nazghun

فَٱسْتَعِذْ

then seek refuge

fa-is'taʿidh

بِٱللَّهِ ۚ

in Allah

bil-lahi

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

سَمِيعٌ

(is) All-Hearing

samīʿun

عَلِيمٌ

All-Knowing

ʿalīmun

٢٠٠

And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allāh. Indeed, He is Hearing and Knowing.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ٱتَّقَوْا۟

fear (Allah)

ittaqaw

إِذَا

when

idhā

مَسَّهُمْ

touches them

massahum

طَـٰٓئِفٌۭ

an evil thought

ṭāifun

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ

the Shaitaan

l-shayṭāni

تَذَكَّرُوا۟

they remember (Allah)

tadhakkarū

فَإِذَا

and then

fa-idhā

هُم

they

hum

مُّبْصِرُونَ

(are) those who see (aright)

mub'ṣirūna

٢٠١

Indeed, those who fear Allāh - when an impulse touches them from Satan, they remember [Him] and at once they have insight.

— Saheeh International

وَإِخْوَٰنُهُمْ

But their brothers

wa-ikh'wānuhum

يَمُدُّونَهُمْ

they plunge them

yamuddūnahum

فِى

in

ٱلْغَىِّ

the error

l-ghayi

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

لَا

not

يُقْصِرُونَ

they cease

yuq'ṣirūna

٢٠٢

But their brothers1 - they [i.e., the devils] increase them in error; then they do not stop short.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

لَمْ

not

lam

تَأْتِهِم

you bring them

tatihim

بِـَٔايَةٍۢ

a Sign

biāyatin

قَالُوا۟

they say

qālū

لَوْلَا

Why (have) not

lawlā

ٱجْتَبَيْتَهَا ۚ

you devised it

ij'tabaytahā

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنَّمَآ

Only

innamā

أَتَّبِعُ

I follow

attabiʿu

مَا

what

يُوحَىٰٓ

is revealed

yūḥā

إِلَىَّ

to me

ilayya

مِن

from

min

رَّبِّى ۚ

my Lord

rabbī

هَـٰذَا

This (is)

hādhā

بَصَآئِرُ

enlightenment

baṣāiru

مِن

from

min

رَّبِّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbikum

وَهُدًۭى

and guidance

wahudan

وَرَحْمَةٌۭ

and mercy

waraḥmatun

لِّقَوْمٍۢ

for a people

liqawmin

يُؤْمِنُونَ

who believe

yu'minūna

٢٠٣

And when you, [O Muḥammad], do not bring them a sign [i.e., miracle], they say, "Why have you not contrived it?" Say, "I only follow what is revealed to me from my Lord. This [Qur’ān] is enlightenment from your Lord and guidance and mercy for a people who believe."

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

قُرِئَ

is recited

quri-a

ٱلْقُرْءَانُ

the Quran

l-qur'ānu

فَٱسْتَمِعُوا۟

then listen

fa-is'tamiʿū

لَهُۥ

to it

lahu

وَأَنصِتُوا۟

and pay attention

wa-anṣitū

لَعَلَّكُمْ

so that you may

laʿallakum

تُرْحَمُونَ

receive mercy

tur'ḥamūna

٢٠٤

So when the Qur’ān is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy.

— Saheeh International

وَٱذْكُر

And remember

wa-udh'kur

رَّبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

فِى

in

نَفْسِكَ

yourself

nafsika

تَضَرُّعًۭا

humbly

taḍarruʿan

وَخِيفَةًۭ

and (in) fear

wakhīfatan

وَدُونَ

and without

wadūna

ٱلْجَهْرِ

the loudness

l-jahri

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْقَوْلِ

[the] words

l-qawli

بِٱلْغُدُوِّ

in the mornings

bil-ghuduwi

وَٱلْـَٔاصَالِ

and (in) the evenings

wal-āṣāli

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَكُن

be

takun

مِّنَ

among

mina

ٱلْغَـٰفِلِينَ

the heedless

l-ghāfilīna

٢٠٥

And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech - in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

عِندَ

(are) near

ʿinda

رَبِّكَ

your Lord

rabbika

لَا

not

يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ

(do) they turn away in pride

yastakbirūna

عَنْ

from

ʿan

عِبَادَتِهِۦ

His worship

ʿibādatihi

وَيُسَبِّحُونَهُۥ

And they glorify Him

wayusabbiḥūnahu

وَلَهُۥ

and to Him

walahu

يَسْجُدُونَ ۩

they prostrate

yasjudūna

٢٠٦

Indeed, those who are near your Lord [i.e., the angels] are not prevented by arrogance from His worship, and they exalt Him, and to Him they prostrate.

— Saheeh International
