Nature of the Janzah

The Janzah prayer to be done in congragation, meaning you will be following the Imam. So the below steps show you how to preform it, but the imam will always be leading.

Intention before the Prayer

After performing Wudu, stand towards the Qibla/Body and make the following silent intention: “I intend to pray for the sake of Allah Most High and to supplicate for the deceased.”

Takbeer (Starting the prayer)

Raise your hands to ear level, palms facing towards the Qibla

"Allahu Akbar"

"Allah is the Greatest"

Seek refuge from the Shaytan

“A’ūdhu billāhi minash-shaytānir-rajīm”

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaitan

Recite Surah Al-Fatiha (Silently)

Raise your hands to ear level, palms facing towards the Qibla

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem

In the Name of God, There Beneficent, The Merciful

Alhamdu lillaahi Rabbil’aalameen

Praise is due only for god, the lord of the worlds

Ar-Rahmaanir-Raheem

The beneficent, The merciful

Maaliki Yawmid-Deen

The Master of the Day of Judgment

Iyyaaka na’budu wa lyyaaka nasta’een

You alone do we serve and (From) you alone do we seek help

Ihdina-Siraatal-Mustaqeen

Guide us to the straight path

Siraatal-lazeena an’amta ‘alaihim ghayril-maghdoobi ‘alaihim wa lad-daaalleen

The path of those, on whole you have bestowed favours, not (The path of those), upon whom is your anger, nor of those who are astray

Aameen

Accept our supplication.

Recite Surah Al-Kawthar (Silently, unless you're are the imam leading) (You can recite from any Surah)

Innaa a'ataynaakal kawthar

Indeed, we hve granted, Oh Muhammadi, Al. Kawthar

Fasalli lirabika wanhar

So prayer to your lord and secrifice [For Hime Alone]

Inna shaaniaka huwal abtar

Indeed your enemy is the one cut off.

Say 2nd Takbeer

You can either choose to raise your hands again up to your earlobes or leave them as is. Both are permissible.

"Allahu Akbar"

"Allah is the Greatest"

Recite the durood-e-Ibrahim

Allaahumma salli aalaa Muhammad, wa aalaa aalee Muhammad

Oh Allah, honor Muhammad and the family of Muhammad

kamaa sallayta aalaa Ibraheem wa aalaa aalee Ibraheem

as you honored Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim

innaka Hameedum-Majeed

Verily, You are the Praiseworthy, the Glorious

Allaahumma baarik aalaa Muhammad, wa aalaa aalee Muhammad

Oh Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad

kamaa baarakta aalaa Ibraheem wa aalaa aalee Ibraheem

as you blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim

innaka Hameedum-Majeed

Verily, You are the Praiseworthy, the Glorious

Say 3rd Takbeer

You can either choose to raise your hands again up to your earlobes or leave them as is. Both are permissible.

"Allahu Akbar"

"Allah is the Greatest"

Perform a dua for the dead

After the third takbir, you can take some time to pray to Allah in your head in whatever language feels most comfortable to you. This prayer can a personal one where you express your heartfelt wishes for the deceased to find peace.

Though if you wish to use a traditional dua, recite the following:

“Allaahum-maghfir lihayyinaa, wa mayyitinaa, wa shaahidinaa, wa ghaa’ibinaa, wa sagheerinaa wa kabeerinaa, wa thakarinaa wa ‘unthaanaa. Allaahumma man ‘ahyaytahu minnaa fa’ahyihi ‘alal-‘Islaami, wa man tawaffaytahu minnaa fatawaffahu ‘alal-‘eemaani, Allaahumma laa tahrimnaa ‘ajrahu wa laa tudhillanaa ba’dahu​.”

“O Allah! Forgive our living and our dead, those who are with us and those who are absent, our young and our old, our men and our women. O Allah, whoever you give life from among us, give him life in Islam, and whomever you take away from us, take him away in Faith. O Allah, do not forbid us their reward and do not send us astray after them.”

Say 4th Takbeer

You can either choose to raise your hands again up to your earlobes or leave them as is. Both are permissible.

Salam to the right - Turn your head right

As-salaamu aalaykum wa rahmatullah

Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy

Salam to the left - Turn your head left
